PHILADELPHIA - So, about the state of the Nationals roster ...
Everyone inside the visitors' clubhouse was aglow last night following a 10-8 win over the Phillies that defied logic, but the reality of the situation also had to set in at some point. This team is decimated by injuries right now, and two more players joined the club during this game.
Matt Adams and Michael A. Taylor each departed by the fourth inning with injuries. Adams jammed his left shoulder diving into first base to complete an impressive play in the field. Taylor jammed his left wrist trying to make a diving catch in shallow center field.
Both players had X-rays taken, and manager Davey Martinez said both came back negative. Martinez also said both players will get MRIs this morning, and he's particularly concerned about Adams' shoulder.
All of this on the heels of Juan Soto landing on the 10-day injured list earlier yesterday with back spasms. And then there are Trea Turner, Anthony Rendon and Ryan Zimmerman, all on the 10-day IL as well, with Rendon the first of the group likely to return, but not until Tuesday at the earliest.
We'll find out later this morning about the statuses of Adams and Taylor, but the Nationals couldn't afford to wait until they know the MRI results. Infielder Jake Noll, the only remaining healthy player on the 40-man roster not already in the big leagues, was a late scratch from Triple-A Fresno's lineup last night. He appears to have taken a red-eye flight from Las Vegas to Philadelphia and will be available to be added to the active roster today if needed.
Martinez hadn't met with general manager Mike Rizzo before speaking with reporters postgame, but he did offer up that "we should probably get someone on the way, just in case."
Even if Noll replaces Adams, the Nationals' roster of position players is kind of a mess. Howie Kendrick, who already has been filling in at third base for Rendon, probably would have to take over at first base. Noll, Wilmer Difo and Adrián Sanchez would assume third base responsibilities.
If Taylor is unable to play, the Nationals would have only three healthy outfielders: Adam Eaton, Victor Robles and Andrew Stevenson (who was just called up from Fresno yesterday to replace Soto). Sanchez wound up playing left field for the final two innings of the win after backup catcher Kurt Suzuki pinch-hit for Stevenson (and hit the game-tying, three-run homer).
