Stewart and Carroll joining Orioles (updated)

The Orioles are prepared to add two more players to their expanded roster this afternoon, selecting the contract of outfielder DJ Stewart and recalling reliever Cody Carroll.

Stewart, a first-round pick in 2015 out of Florida State University, will become the 55th player used by the Orioles this season to establish the club record. He also will be the 14th to make his major league debut, tying the record set in 1955.

The Orioles haven't announced the moves, but a source confirmed them.

The 40-man roster is full, but the Orioles can transfer outfielder Mark Trumbo or reliever Pedro Araujo to the 60-day disabled list if they want to avoid designating a player for assignment.

Not that they're devoid of candidates.

Stewart moved up to Triple-A Norfolk this season and batted .235/.329/.387 with 24 doubles, two triples, 12 home runs and 55 RBIs in 116 games. He also stole 11 bases in 15 attempts.

He collected 12 hits in 41 at-bats over his last 11 games.

Stewart has registered a .351 on-base percentage in four minor league seasons and he hit 21 home runs with 79 RBIs with Double-A Bowie in 2017.

Carroll-Delivers-Gray-sidebar.jpgCarroll came to the Orioles in the Zach Britton trade with the Yankees and posted a 7.00 ERA and 1.889 WHIP in nine innings. He made his major league debut on Aug. 1 in the Bronx.

Carroll was 4-0 with a 2.72 ERA and 1.14 WHIP in 37 relief appearances with the Tides.

The active roster for the Orioles will hold 33 players going into tonight's series opener against the Athletics at Camden Yards.

The rain has stopped and the grounds crew peeled the tarp off the infield. The sun is shining.

We'll see for how long.

Update: The Orioles transferred both Trumbo and Araujo to the 60-day DL and also reinstated catcher Andrew Susac from the restricted list. Susac won't join the team, but he returns to the 40-man roster.
