#TBT to "Nationals Classics": Pass the salami

There's nothing like a hero sandwich made with salami. So MASN serves up a triple-decker deal, along with a side of wild Werth and a Zimmerman three-run blast, in the upcoming batch of "Nationals Classics." Your plate is brimming with grand slams and walk-off heroics, so dig in!

Thursday, Jan. 24, 12:30 p.m. - The Nationals didn't wait for the game to be over before starting the fireworks. It was July 4, 2011, and the Cubs were in town. With the score tied 4-4, Jayson Werth drew a walk to lead off the bottom of the 10th. Liván Hernández pinch-hit in the pitcher's spot and would presumably take the mound in the top of the 11th, but that inning never came. Hernández executed the sacrifice bunt to get Werth to second. That brought Iván Rodríguez to the plate, but he didn't need to put the ball in play for the Nationals to get the victory. Werth stole third, then scored the game-winner on Carlos Mármol's wild pitch.

Friday, Jan. 25, 7 p.m. - Usually, when Max Scherzer makes an appearance on "Nationals Classics," it's in a game in which the Nationals ace thoroughly dominates the opposition. This one is a bit of an exception, even though Mad Max struck out seven over six innings and got credit for the win on Sept. 8, 2017. The Phillies got to him for three runs in the first. Scherzer settled down and gave up just one more before exiting after six, but that wouldn't be the end of the scoring for either side. The Nats beat Phillies starter Jake Thompson like the proverbial rented mule, with Michael A. Taylor's inside-the-park grand slam the big blow. With the Nats up by four heading into the ninth, Shawn Kelley surrendered two singles and a Maikel Franco homer without recording an out. Sean Doolittle took over and struck out the next three batters to seal the 11-10 win.

Monday, Jan. 28, 9 a.m. - Ryan Zimmerman delivered a walk-off slam to cap the six-run ninth inning that upended the Phillies 8-4 on Aug. 19, 2011.

Tuesday, Jan. 29, 7 p.m. - On Aug. 13, 2017, it was Howie Kendrick's turn to launch a walk-off grand slam and ruin Albert Suárez's day as the Nats overcame the Giants 6-2.

Wednesday, Jan. 30, 9 a.m. - Zimmerman's homer against the Phillies on July 31, 2010 only produced three runs, but it still counted as walk-off as the Nats walked away with a 7-5 triumph. Ryan Madson - who pitched for the Phils for eight years before wandering from Kansas City to Oakland to Washington before the Nats traded him away to the Dodgers last season - worked a flawless eighth before Zimmerman took Brad Lidge deep in the ninth.
