Things looking good for Carroll, Nady

VIERA, Fla. - Here's what Davey Johnson had to say about his bench players following today's win over the Braves: "It's no secret I like the way (Brett) Carroll fits. He's a little better fit for what we're trying to do. (Xavier) Nady is a nice fit, too. (Mark) DeRosa's a nice fit." It might not be official that Carroll and Nady will make the Nats' 25-man roster, but it's pretty darn close to official. Carroll helped get that much closer to locking up a roster spot by going 1-for-2 with a three-run triple and two walks today. "I just felt good in my approach," Carroll said. "It's been kind of a process this spring, making different adjustments, and today I just felt real relaxed. Seeing the ball well. There's some good arms out there and first at-bat I think was key because I was able to see some pitches and gather information. It just kind of helps you get into the day." The walks were nice. The triple off the right-center field wall which cleared the bases was better. Carroll then scooted home when Jack Wilson's relay throw got away, giving the Nationals a 6-1 lead. "Guys in the dugout were laughing, saying that was like a Little League home run," Carroll said. "My first job is to hit a sac fly, get something in the air to get the runner in. I got something good to hit and I was able to drive it in the outfield. I just kept running until I ... didn't stop." I'll have more on Carroll tomorrow morning. As for Nady, he went 1-for-4 today with two strikeouts and a sharply hit single to left. Scheduled to start in right field before DeRosa was scratched because of quad tightness, Nady saw time in left field and at first base today. "I think he's looking good," Johnson said. "He's going to get a lot of playing time from now to the end. I'm sure there's a lot of rust there. He was injured last year. I like what I'm seeing." A couple more outfield notes to pass along: Roger Bernadina will return from his father's funeral in Curacao sometime Friday night, while Rick Ankiel will not play again tomorrow, as he's dealing with quad tightness. "I want him to be able to run things down," Johnson said of Ankiel. "I want his wheels getting right."
