Tillman records five outs in shortest start of season (O's lose 5-3)

The Red Sox worked Chris Tillman tonight for 35 pitches in the first inning.

They got him out of the game in the second.

Will anything work in the Orioles' favor in this series? For the remaining games on the schedule?

Tillman walked David Ortiz with the bases loaded and two outs in the second inning and manager Buck Showalter made the brisk walk to the mound. Vance Worley retired Hanley Ramirez on a popup with the Red Sox leading 3-0.

Tillman is charged with three runs and five hits in 1 2/3 innings, his shortest start of the season. He worked two innings on Aug. 20 against the Astros and went on the disabled list with right shoulder bursitis.

What's to blame tonight?

Tillman retired the first two batters tonight before Mookie Betts singled, the outfielder's 19th hit in 35 at-bats at Camden Yards this season. Ortiz walked and Ramirez followed with an RBI single to center field.

Travis Shaw struck out on Tillman's 35th pitch.

Tillman didn't figure to get deep into his start, but 1 2/3 innings?

Jackie Bradley Jr. led off the second with a triple into the right field corner and scored on Sandy Leon's single. Tillman got a strikeout and flyout, but ran into more two-out trouble by surrendering a single to Brock Holt and walking Betts and Ortiz.

Holt is 7-for-12 lifetime against Tillman.

Worley also entered a May 28 game in Cleveland in the second inning after Ubaldo Jimenez lasted only 1 2/3 innings.

Tillman has allowed 14 runs in the first inning this season, his highest total for any inning.

The first-inning pitch counts for Orioles starters in this series read as 23, 18, 28 and 35. The Red Sox aren't picking on them. It's what they do.

David Price allowed a two-out single to Manny Machado tonight and still made it back to the dugout after 10 pitches. It's what the Orioles so often do, certainly when they're scuffling at the plate.

Caleb Joseph, still in search of his first RBI, stranded two runners in the second inning.

We'll find out later whether Tillman's shoulder flared up or just the Red Sox's offense again.

Update: Trey Mancini's second major league hit also is a home run, a three-run shot in the third inning that tied the game.

Update II: Another two-out hit burns the Orioles. Andrew Benintendi's RBI single off Vance Worley broke a 3-3 tie in the fifth inning.

Update III: Haney Ramirez homered off Donnie Hart with one out in the seventh to give Boston a 5-3 lead.

Hart hadn't allowed a run in 18 appearances before tonight. He had gone 15 1/3 innings after retiring Ortiz leading off the inning.

Update IV: The Orioles lost to the Red Sox 5-3 before 26,788 at Camden Yards.

The Red Sox earned their first four-game sweep of the Orioles in Baltimore since September 2002.

The Tigers came pass the Orioles for the second wild card if they hold onto their 4-2 lead over the Twins in Game 2 of their doubleheader.
