Today's game and yesterday's leftovers

SARASOTA, Fla. - The Orioles are on the road again this morning, making their first visit to Port Charlotte to play the Rays.

Miguel Gonzalez will work two innings if, of course, his pitch count allows it.

Mike Wright went two innings on Tuesday. Ubaldo Jimenez retired one batter yesterday.

The Rays are sending Erasmo Ramirez to the mound. He's 2-2 with a 3.76 ERA in seven career games (six starts) against the Orioles, but they won't be sending many of their starters.

It is, however, the second-shortest trip of the spring after Bradenton. I'd volunteer for this one if it got me out of Dunedin.

Kim-reporters-sidebar.jpgWe're supposed to see Hyun Soo Kim in the lineup for a third straight day. He's 0-for-6 so far.

Kim pulled all three pitches yesterday that resulted in outs - two grounders and a fly ball. He flied to left field and center field on Tuesday and grounded out to first.

Will the Rays use the same shift against him as the Braves? Better yet, why did the Braves employ a shift against a guy who was playing his first two games in the U.S.?

That must have been some scouting report.

"I wonder if he's ever been shifted over there," Showalter said. "I doubt it. Maybe a little bit.

"He can hit the ball the other way pretty easily. He's a pretty good bunter, too. I asked him how many times he's bunted. I think the word was 'never' in Korean."

Kim didn't have much on his throw home yesterday on Nate Freiman's RBI single to left field in the second inning, the ball taking a couple of hops before reaching the plate. Again, it's too early to start grading him.

Chris Davis' home run to center field leading off the bottom of the second inning was legit, in no way needing the wind to move it along. The ball ended up near second base on one of the back fields.

Mark Trumbo has gotten bad reads on two fly balls to right field in two games at Ed Smith Stadium, including Sunday's intrasquad affair. One ball deflected off his glove, the other cleared his head as he raced to the fence.

I'm not rolling out my jump to conclusions mat, especially with the challenges that confront outfielders in the Grapefruit League. However, Trumbo doesn't carry a reputation for strong defensive play beyond the infield and his critics already are howling.

"It's a challenge for everybody," Showalter said. "When you see guys like Adam (Jones) drift, it's just hard to catch a ball smoothly. But I think that's yet to be seen. It's early. The wind was blowing out to left (yesterday), he was playing pretty shallow. Those balls that go up out there ... That's a ball he probably catches in the regular season - I hope.

"The depth perception. Obviously, we play some days where there are no clouds. A lot of it's the wind, a lot of it's the background. Actually, we have one of the better ones here except that roof line is white."
