Orioles manager Brandon Hyde said DJ Stewart remains under concussion protocol after going on the seven-day injured list today, the result of last night's fly ball that smashed into the outfielder's left temple. He isn't sure how long Stewart will be out.
"Hopefully he checks all the boxes coming up soon and we're able to activate him at some point after the seven days," Hyde said.
Hyde explained why he kept Stewart in left field for the rest of the inning before sending up Jace Peterson as a pinch-hitter. Hyde and assistant athletic trainer Patrick Wesley checked on Stewart, who had a large welt on his head.
"He actually joked with me when I went out there," Hyde said. "We felt pretty comfortable. He was joking, 'We have to stop meeting like this.' The last time I was out was in Texas. So I thought that showed some pretty good awareness. And then (Wesley) checked him out and I guess as the inning went along he started to feel a little funny, a little dizzy, so we got him out."
The Orioles considered all of their roster options before deciding to go back to a two-man bench. Left-hander John Means was activated from the 10-day injured list as Stewart's replacement.
"We thought about a lot of things," Hyde said, "but we went with just activating Means and getting through today and with the off-day tomorrow and then we'll kind of reassess after the game today."
Hanser Alberto makes his first start in left field, his total experience being one inning earlier this season.
What are Hyde's hopes for Alberto tonight?
"That he catches it, throws it back in," Hyde said.
"He hasn't had a whole lot of experience obviously out there," Hyde said, "but he does work out there quite a bit during BP and he's been out there with Arnie (Beyeler) on occasion for (when) something like this happens to increase his value and increase his versatility. So he's out there tonight."
Alberto takes it all in stride. He didn't need a lot of advance warning.
"I just think Alberto likes to be in the lineup," Hyde said. "I think if you put him behind the plate he would go for it. I just think he likes to play and so I don't think it was a big deal."
Beyeler is the first base coach and outfield instructor and the latter duties include transitioning infielders to new positions. Stevie Wilkerson had been playing center and assisting in the corners. Alberto serves as left fielder tonight.
Check tonight's outfield alignment and it's three infielders holding down the positions. Trey Mancini in right suddenly has become the most experienced of the bunch.
"(Beyeler's) had quite a few guys who haven't had a lot of experience in the outfield and done a really nice job," Hyde said. "Our guys put the work in. Arnie's obviously a tireless worker. He was out there with Hanser around 2 o'clock this afternoon and he works every day with anybody that's got a chance to play the outfield.
"I'm just really happy with the work he's done and our guys take to it. Our guys just want to play. They're happy to be in the lineup."
Anthony Santander is the designated hitter again. He's apparently a little banged up and Hyde is keeping him off the field before the Astros come to town Friday night.
"He feels better today," Hyde said, "so another day of DH and then off-day tomorrow and hopefully everything goes well and he'll be out in the outfield following the off-day against Houston."
Means, coming back from a left biceps strain, will be on a pitch count.
"I'm not going to be real aggressive with him," Hyde said. "We're going to monitor him closely after every inning. I'm not going to push him to 100 pitches or anything like that. I'm going to cut him back a little bit if everything goes well."
Hyde was happy to find out that the Orioles are playing the Red Sox next summer in the "MLB Little League Classic" in Williamsport, Pa. The Aug. 23 game, airing on ESPN, has his full approval.
"I'm really looking forward to it," he said. "I know that just watching it on TV how much fun it looks like the players have and the interaction with the kids. And obviously Williamsport is something that we all dreamed about as kids trying to get there and playing in the Little League World Series. I've never been there, so to go there and experience that, meet everybody up there and to play in Sunday Night Baseball in that kind of environment is going to be a really cool experience."
Hyde's son, Colton, plays Little League ball and turns 12 next year. There's always that chance that he participates while the Orioles are in town.
A little pressure on Colton to make it?
"Yeah bigtime," Hyde quipped. "We're going to long-toss right after this. We've got to work on a little bit more fastball command. Not going to center-cut any fastballs.
"It's something that I always wanted to do as a kid, obviously. You grow up watching it on ABC and something that you were trying to get there as a kid. We fell a little short but it's a really, really cool thing and Americana."
