Walters, Werth and Roark discuss Nats' win over Marlins

Jayson Werth and Zach Walters had as big a hand as anyone in the Nats' 6-3 come-from-behind win over the Marlins on Wednesday.

Werth tied it with a three-run homer in the sixth and Walters gave the Nats a 4-3 lead with a homer in the eighth.

Right-hander Tanner Roark also contributed, giving up three earned runs in 6 1/3 innings. All three talked about the win in the visiting clubhouse at Marlins Park.

Walters on his approach to the at-bat where he homered:
"Trying to get on base, first of all. Something I can handle. (Mike Dunn has) got a good slider and for him to throw his first pitch, it kind of helped me out seeing it. I was looking for a fastball and he happened to leave a slider up again, and it stayed fair."

Walters on homers in back-to-back at-bats:
"I'm just killing the spread here. New guy, eating as much as I can. But no, I've got nothing to say about that. Just luck of the draw."

Walters on teammates celebrating with shaving cream and rosin after the game:
"Everything. I think the bat boy got in on it, too, with the pine tar. I can't hear out of this ear right now."

Roark on his start:
"I felt good. I felt finally in command of my fastball and I was finally going toward the plate instead of pulling off, which was a big help for me. My last start, all I was doing was pulling off the pitch and not following through as much as I would like to. So I felt a lot better. I'll build off that, for sure."

Roark on the comeback:
"We battled our way back and great offense, great homer by Werth. So we battled ourselves back into the game and came out on top."

Werth on Marlins starter Jose Fernandez:
"Well, I mean the guy's obviously got good stuff. I hit a ball hard my first at-bat, but, you know, I think he started me out with a slider, and then I think he missed his spot back over the plate a little bit, and it was elevated. Put a good swing on it and barreled up. But, I tell you. This park's so big. You just, you really just don't know. So, I think in most other parks, it's probably a no-doubter. Here, it's scraping the back of the fence. But, good timing. We needed it."

Werth on wondering how long it would take to hit a home run this series:
"Ever since they built this place, I've been wondering. I think that's my first one here. It's a big yard. (Giancarlo) Stanton makes it look small, but it's a big place. ... When I came around first base, Rob Drake signaled homer, so that's all I needed."

Werth on the number of comebacks:
"We got good energy in the dugout. We've been upbeat all year. I don't think at any point in any game, except for maybe last night's game, that we felt like we were out of it. We feel like we can come back. It doesn't matter who's out there. I mean, obviously, the guy's got good stuff, and you don't wanna get down too far. But we were able to come back, and we got some big hits. Walters' homer was huge, and (Ian Desmond) got us a big hit there. The bullpen shut the door. All-in-all, it was a good game, the way the road trip started. To get two out of three here and get back home, we've got some good teams coming in.

Werth on Walters:
"Going back to last September, he played really good. He put together some good at-bats, and you know, looks like his approach at the plate is pretty refined for a kid that doesn't have much big-league experience. He's got talent, he's got pop, switch-hitter. He's got a chance."

Werth on the comebacks again:
"Definitely a contrast from last year. It's good. We got fight. We got a lot of fight in us. That's a good sign, especially early on. It's something you can kind of, you can build on as the season goes, too, you know? You got that in your pocket, so these are good wins, for sure. It's really early. We got a long way to go, of course, but I like where we're at."

Werth on the upcoming series with the Cardinals:
"They're all a test. Doesn't matter who you face nowadays. It seems this league's gotten more competitive the last, since I came to the league. There's not too many teams that you can just look past. These guys are obviously one of the better teams in the league year in and year out. Look forward to it. These are fun games, good team. We match up well against them though, and I like where we're at. Again, this is a new year. So you can throw all that other stuff out the window that happened before. We've got some stuff going here, and I like our chances. We'll play the games and see what happens."
