Nationals outfielder Jayson Werth pleaded guilty to reckless driving charges today in Fairfax County Circuit Court and has been sentenced to serve five days in jail. In addition, his driver's license will be suspended for 30 days.
Werth, 35, was sentenced to 10 days in jail (with 170 days suspended) on Dec. 5, and lost his driver's license as a result of the verdict. Werth appealed the verdict, leading to today's adjudication.
He was cited on July 6 by a Virginia state trooper for driving his two-door Porsche at 105 mph in a posted 55 mph zone on Interstate 495 in Fairfax County. The incident occurred at approximately 9:40 a.m. on a Sunday morning while the Nationals were in the middle of a three-game home series against the Cubs.
Nationals position players are scheduled to report to Space Coast Stadium for spring training on Feb. 24. It's unknown whether Werth's conviction and sentence will affect him reporting to camp on time.
The Washington Post first reported the news of Werth's sentence.
Update: The Post reported that Werth will serve his sentence on weekends, which will allow him to continue rehabilitation from postseason surgery on his right shoulder.
Update II: The Nationals have issued the following statement on Werth's conviction: "We are aware of the agreement reached today. It is clear that Jayson has taken this matter seriously and with great personal reflection. We do not condone reckless behavior, and we expect all members of the Washington Nationals organization to act in a responsible manner. We support Jayson, who is an integral part of the community and of the Washington Nationals family."
