Williams, Soriano, Storen, Roark discuss Nats' 4-3 walk-off loss

OAKLAND - This was a tough one. The Nationals led 3-1 entering the bottom of the ninth inning, with their closer on the hill who had delivered 25 consecutive scoreless innings. Tanner Roark had thrown 7 2/3 stellar innings, and the Nats were on their way to securing at least one game of a tough three-game set against the A's. Instead, they left O.Co Coliseum with a 4-3, 10-inning loss. Rafael Soriano surrendered two runs in the ninth, then Drew Storen allowed the game-winning run in the 10th. Here are postgame reactions from the Nats' clubhouse: Matt Williams On this being a tough loss given how well Roark pitched: "Yeah, sure. Going to the ninth with a two-run lead with a guy who hasn't given up a run in 25 innings, and it doesn't happen for ya, it's disappointing. But that's baseball. Have to come play tomorrow." On what happened with Soriano in the ninth: "Nothing in particular. Ball's up in the strike zone a little bit, but they put good swings on it. Jam-shot base hit to start it off, then a double, then a base hit to tie it. They just put good swings on it." On if the Nats would have had a chance to cut down Jed Lowrie at the plate before Soriano cut off Zach Walters' throw: "Yeah, I think we've got a chance. I don't know why he cut that ball off. I think, one, he should be backing up the play, in case the ball gets by. And so, I don't know what he's doing there. I don't know why he cut it." On what made Roark so good tonight: "Fastball location, just like we talked about. Tonight, he threw the fastball in to left-handers. Comeback fastball to freeze a few guys. He pitched really well." On Nate McLouth just missing Jon Jaso's double off the right field wall that won the game: "Just above. He jumped, and it was off the scoreboard just above him. He's gotta sell out for that ball and try and catch it. Just a little too tall." Rafael Soriano On the blown save: "A bad day. That's all I can say. I cannot be perfect every time." On cutting off Walters' throw in front of the plate: "I think that be a big mistake. I don't think the guy we have playing on that throw. I asked Ramos. He said think it be a big play." On if this outing is easy to forget because of his recent success: "I find out tomorrow. Tomorrow be a different day. I come back from that." Drew Storen On the bullpen having a tough night despite a solid start to the season: "It's just one of those nights. Was tough on us. Tanner had a great outing. It's pretty tough." On the pitch to Jaso: "Just left it over the heart of the plate. He's a good hitter. He's not going to miss it. Just need to locate it better. Hopped on that first pitch. I need to make a better pitch." Tanner Roark On his outing: "I felt good. Me and (Wilson Ramos) were on the same page. Makes it a lot easier. Rhythm was good. Sinker was working well. Changeup, too. All my pitches felt good." On the importance of the changeup and sinker against lefties: "You've got to have them on. I like to go in on lefties and righties, but especially to lefties and run them back over the plate." On trying to convince Williams that he should stay in the game in the eighth: "Yeah. My stuff (was) feeling good. (Tyler Clippard) came in and did a good job. That's the coaches' call anyway. It is what it is."
