NEW YORK - Nationals manager Matt Williams updated the apparent hand injury suffered by catcher Wilson Ramos with somewhat promising news that preliminary X-rays at Citi Field came back negative.
"He will see our hand specialist tomorrow," Williams said of Ramos. "There was a foul tip and he took a swing he didn't feel good on. We got him out of the game and took a picture of it."
Williams said he feels for any player who gets injured, especially Ramos because of all the injuries the catcher has had to battle the past few seasons.
"He works really hard," Williams said. "Anybody on our team you don't want to see that, but especially on opening day. They are talking about bringing a catcher up. That may happen as soon as Tuesday."
Jhonatan Solano is currently on the Triple-A Syracuse roster while Sandy Leon is on the Double-A Harrisburg roter. Both have major league experience.
Left fielder Bryce Harper was involved in a nasty collision with Mets second baseman Eric Young Jr. early in the game. Williams said Harper "is good" and talked about how they checked him out before his return to the game.
"We talked to him that inning," Williams said. "The very next inning he had the concussion test from the doctor. He was cleared. He felt OK. He got banged, he passed the test. He is fine. That is the way Bryce plays. He plays hard. Those things are going to happen from time to time. Doctor cleared him up. He should be good."
Williams confirmed that Ryan Zimmerman was not taken out of the game because of an injury. Zimmerman was removed because they were down to one catcher, Jose Lobaton, with the injury to Ramos.
"The only thing that worried me during the game was that we burned Kevin (Frandsen) and he is technically the emergency catcher," Williams said. "If Wilson is out of the game, we are down to the situation that we have talked about all spring.
"We wanted to leave Danny in the game, that is why we took Ryan out in that spot the game in case something happened to Loby. That is the reason we took Zim out."
