Wojciechowski joins Orioles at Tropicana Field

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - The Orioles assigned right-hander Asher Wojciechowski to Triple-A Norfolk after today's trade with the Indians, but he never made it.

Wojciechowski is in the visiting clubhouse at Tropicana Field, with the Orioles placing him on the 24-hour taxi squad.

Dylan Bundy has been scratched from Tuesday's start against the Rays and Wojciechowski apparently is with the Orioles in case a roster move is necessary.

Bundy also is in the clubhouse and manager Brandon Hyde will address the right-hander's status later today. Hyde is scheduled to meet with the media around 5:10 p.m.

Orioles-Pins-Shirt-Sidebar.jpgWojciechowski could be on the verge of appearing in his first major league game since Sept. 30, 2017 with the Reds. He signed with the Orioles in December 2017, made 12 starts and seven relief appearances with Norfolk and was released in July.

The rotation already is missing Alex Cobb, who's out for the year after undergoing hip surgery and is awaiting a procedure on his knee. John Means just came off the injured list. Dan Straily accepted an outright assignment to Norfolk. David Hess was put in the bullpen and optioned.

Jimmy Yacabonis has been used as an opener, but was bypassed tonight for Tom Eshelman, who had his contract selected today and is making his major league debut.

Bundy lasted four innings Wednesday against the Padres and allowed five runs and six hits with three walks and two home runs in a 10-5 loss.

Meanwhile, Trey Mancini used humor today to express his sadness and disappointment in being passed over for the All-Star Game. He also offered his support of Means, who is the lone Orioles representative.

"It was a tough day yesterday," Mancini said. "But first I just want to say that John 100 percent deserves it. He's been unbelievable for us this year. For him to think he was going to be one of the first cuts in spring training this year and then to make the All-Star team, it's incredible. And he's been lights out for us this year. He's been a godsend for us and he 100 percent deserves it.

"I do wish I was going with him. Yesterday was a really hard day for me. I'm not going to lie. But kind of got myself together before the game and went out there and it was actually kind of a nice distraction for three hours. But yeah, I think I deserve to be going and there's nothing you can really do about it now. But it was tough.

"I think the toughest part was probably telling my family. I had kind of been imagining for a little bit calling them and telling them that I made the All-Star team, so it was a little bit of a different conversation than I thought that I would have. And especially hearing my dad's voice. He's a very objective, realistic guy. He's a doctor so he's always been like that. And never really wants more for me than what I deserve. And I think he really thought I deserved this, so it was kind of tough to hear him yesterday when I told him that I didn't make it. So that was probably the hardest part of everything.

"I let myself be sad yesterday and I woke up today with my head high and this team needs me to be who I am and that's what I'm going to do. So I'm going to keep trying to play well and be there for my team and that's all that you can really do. This doesn't really change anything. I'm still proud of how far I've come the last year compared to last All-Star break to this one, but yeah, it definitely stings a little but there are some incredible players who got left off. You can go through a laundry list of names.

"It's just tough, that's the way it goes sometimes. Things aren't fair and don't always go your way. Yeah, it was tough, but I'm feeling better."
