Wrapping up a 12-5 win

SARASOTA, Fla. - Infielders Ryan Flaherty and Paul Janish aren't expected to be ready for Thursday's split-squad games, leaving the Orioles in a bit of a roster bind as they face the Twins at home and the Yankees in Tampa.

Flaherty is recovering from a sore shoulder and the Orioles want to give him one more day. Janish signed a minor league contract over the weekend and still needs to shake off some rust.

The Orioles will be digging deep into their minor league camp for extra infielders, especially with second baseman Jonathan Schoop away from the team during the World Baseball Classic. He flew to Korea to join Team Netherlands.

Showalter said outfielders DJ Stewart and Austin Hays will be in Tampa.

Showalter will be challenged to get from Sarasota to Tampa in time for first pitch against the Yankees. He needs a quick game against the Twins. New Gulf Coast League manager Carlos Tosca will manage the Orioles if Showalter is late.

The Orioles returned to the .500 mark with today's 12-5 win over the Red Sox. Dylan Bundy served up a two-run homer to Andrew Benitendi, the second batter of the game, but retired six of the next seven batters with two strikeouts.

"Good first day," Showalter said. "He felt good. Threw some sliders. It was a good starting point for him."

Bundy decided to call the pitch "a cutter." Showalter went with "a small slider."

"As long as he keeps the depth with it," Showalter said. "Guys get in trouble with the cutter when it's too much lateral."

Bundy had stopped throwing it to ease the strain on his right forearm and elbow.

"We'll see if he keeps it in the repertoire," Showalter said.

Asked whether he has some apprehension, Showalter replied, "A little bit, a little bit. I was going to let him do it a little bit and talk to him. In fact, this might be a good time. Tomorrow or the next day.

"It's something he's always had, but he took it out last year to be on the safe side. He had a little discomfort in his forearm and he thought that was it. He wasn't throwing it properly. A little too much movement instead of throwing through the ball. Roger (McDowell) is aware of it. We've talked about it. He feels real good physically."

Adam Jones homered and had a two-run single this afternoon to continue his exhibition onslaught.

"Adam played about seven innings today in three innings. He got three at-bats and ran all over the field," Showalter said. "He's ready to go."
