Wright vs. Santiago tonight in Anaheim

Mike Wright made his major league debut against the Angels on May 17 in Baltimore and tossed 7 1/3 scoreless innings, holding them to four hits in a 3-0 victory. He became the first pitcher in Orioles history with a scoreless outing in his debut that included no walks.

Wright's first major league strikeout came against someone named Mike Trout. I hear he's pretty good.

It's just a smidgen over one year later and Wright is preparing for his second career start against the Angels, the venue shifting to Anaheim. He's 2-3 with a 5.20 ERA and 1.349 WHIP in seven games (six starts) over 36 1/3 innings.

Wright has registered three quality starts in his last five attempts. The two failures have directly followed a success, the ups and down giving the feel of a Disney ride.

Wright-Delivers-White-Sidebar.jpgIn his last outing, Wright held the Tigers to two runs and three hits over seven innings in a 9-3 win.

The current Angels are 3-for-15 against Wright. Albert Pujols is 1-for-3 with a double and Trout is 0-for-3.

Small sample sizes are all you're going to find here.

Angels left-hander Hector Santiago is 3-2 with a 3.42 ERA and 1.160 WHIP in eight starts over 50 innings. He's coming off eight shutout innings in Seattle, allowing only two hits and walking one. He also permitted only two hits and struck out 10 in seven scoreless in Chicago on April 18.

Santiago is 1-0 with a 2.57 ERA in six career games (three starts) against the Orioles. The current group is 14-for-46 (.304) against him.

Adam Jones is 4-for-10 with a home run, Manny Machado is 3-for-7 with a double, Nolan Reimold is 2-for-4 with double and home run, Chris Davis is 2-for-8 with a double and home run, and Mark Trumbo is 1-for-8 with a home run.

Santiago is 1-1 with a 4.41 ERA in three starts at home and 2-1 with a 2.94 ERA in five starts on the road. Left-handers are batting .214 against him and right-handers are hitting .236.

The Orioles lost four of six games against the Angels last summer and were 1-2 in Anaheim. Their last three-game sweep on Angels turf came in August 2010.

Machado is in a 2-for-25 slump that's lowered his average from .360 to .319. He's 16-for-40 with three doubles, four home runs, 10 RBIs and 11 runs scored in 10 day games, a little something to store away for Sunday.

Joey Rickard has reached base in 12 consecutive games, but he's batting .255/.352/.340 in that stretch. Not the average you want to see, but the Orioles will take the on-base percentage and plus defense.

Rickard recorded his fourth outfield assist yesterday.

Jonathan Schoop is batting .306/.329/.528 (22-for-72) in his last 20 games.
