MIAMI - Let's see, on Monday night Gio Gonzalez carried a no-hitter into the ninth inning. Last night, Max Scherzer homered in the top of the second and then departed after one warmup pitch in the bottom of the second with neck spasms. What does A.J. Cole have in store for us tonight?
Cole gets the ball for only the second time this season in the big leagues, with the Nationals needing a one-time start in the wake of Sunday's doubleheader. Cole had a 5.66 ERA in 16 starts for Triple-A Syracuse, but he was already on the 40-man roster and he pitched well for the Nats in a May start against the Phillies (one run in six innings).
Brandon Kintzler also officially joins the active roster tonight, two days after he was acquired from the Twins in a down-to-the-wire deadline deal. Needing to clear two roster spots for Cole and Kintzler, the Nationals optioned both Sammy SolÃs and Erick Fedde to Syracuse. (If you want to read more into those moves, the fact the club sent Fedde back down would suggest they're fairly confident Scherzer and/or Stephen Strasburg will be pitching again for them within the next six days.)
Vance Worley, who was in Nats camp this spring vying for a long relief job, gets the start tonight for the Marlins, who have needed his services. The veteran right-hander has appeared in 13 games for Miami, five of them starts, and is 0-2 with a 6.42 ERA.
