Notes on Davis, Trumbo, Núñez and more (O's down 8-1)

Orioles manager Brandon Hyde flew into Baltimore this morning after attending his daughter's high school graduation yesterday in Illinois.

It was a rare missed game for Hyde, but a trip that he certainly didn't regret.

"Definitely strange, yeah, but really appreciated the organization allowing me to go," he said. "It's a pretty special day watching Aria graduate and being with the family for about 24 hours and flying back this morning early.

"Happy to be back, but it was a great day."

Hyde was able to subtly track how the Orioles fared against the Giants, including all four innings of David Hess' start.

"I might have had my phone with the game on during the ceremony," he said. "I watched the majority of it besides when they announced her name. Besides that my face was in my phone."

Chris Davis said he expects to come off the injured list when he's eligible Tuesday night in Texas. Davis is hitting today to test his left hip.

Asked whether Davis will play against the Rangers, Hyde replied, "Yeah, probably."

"If all checks out, he'll probably play in Texas."

Meanwhile, Mark Trumbo is joining Triple-A Norfolk Tuesday in Durham and traveling with the Tides to Columbus as part of his injury rehab assignment.

"I think everything's going well," Hyde said. "He's running well, his knee feels good. I know he's getting back at-bats wise and feels good at the plate. We're just seeing how he recovers after running the bases and those types of things in a game situation and it's all checking out well, so we should see him at some point."

Trumbo played in three games with Double-A Bowie and was 3-for-13 with three strikeouts. He went back-to-back nights Thursday and Friday and said he'll be with Norfolk for "the next week and change."

"I think we're looking to get some sort of re-evaluation done after that, so maybe 10th or 11 of June," he said.

"Overall, it's been pretty good. It's kind of a new normal for what it generally feels like after any kind of strenuous run, activity, so I try to wrap my head about that the best I can and figure out how I can make things work with where we're at."

Trumbo is wearing a light brace on his surgically repaired knee. Nothing too cumbersome.

"I try not to wear anything that's too bulky," he said. "It just feels wrong. So I have some compression on there but it's nothing over the top."

The Orioles would like to go back to a four-man bench when Davis returns, but they still aren't comfortable with carrying only seven relievers, especially against the Astros later this week.

"That's probably day-to-day," Hyde said. "It's nice that we have an off-day going into Texas and we're going to kind of play with some things. We'll talk after the game today. But we're also facing Houston in Houston and it's not an easy lineup to navigate through and would like to have some arms there obviously for that series.

"I think we'll see how we are after today going into an off-day tomorrow and figure it out."

Renato Núñez is on pace to hit 43 home runs and he's primarily the designated hitter. Also having Davis and Trumbo on the roster presents a complication that will have to be addressed down the road.

"I think we're waiting to see how Mark is and I think we're going to make those decisions when that gets a little bit closer," Hyde said. "We have a lot of first base/DH types and it's not an ideal situation, so we're going to figure that out when the decision for Mark gets closer."

Núñez leads the team with 15 home runs and he's 17-for-44 (.386) with three doubles, eight homers, 16 RBIs and 13 runs scored in the last 12 games since May 20.

"He's swinging the bat so well," Hyde said. "On a 40-plus home run pace. The last couple weeks have been fantastic. The way he's swinging the bat, you'd like to have him in there, so we'll see what happens."

Hyde, wearing one of the newly designed orange T-shirts handed out this morning to promote Trey Mancini's All-Star candidacy, explained how he's going to spend draft day.

"Well, I'll be just done playing golf and then I'll probably have a show dinner somewhere, and then I'll probably watch the draft like everybody else," he said.

"Root on Mike (Elias) to make good selections."

Update: Mancini hit his 12th home run in the first inning for a 1-0 lead.

Update II: Evan Longoria homered off Gabriel Ynoa in the fourth to tie the game and the Giants took a 2-1 lead on a walk, a balk and Kevin Pillar' RBI single.

Update III: The Giants took advantage of a Stevie Wilkerson error with two unearned runs in the fifth after Longoria's double.

Update IV: Brandon Crawford homered off Branden Kline in the sixth for a 5-1 lead. Pablo Sandoval had a sacrifice fly off Dan Straily in the seventh for a 6-1 lead.

Update V: Crawford homered off Straily in the eighth to increase the lead to 7-1. Steven Duggar doubled and scored on Joe Panik's single for an 8-1 lead.
