Orioles put Urías on injured list and DFA Valdez

The Orioles' roster moves are official and their 28-man roster has been refreshed again.

The club has recalled infielder Jahmai Jones and reliever Konner Wade from Triple-A Norfolk today, placed infielder Ramón Urías on the 10-day injured list with a right adductor strain and designated reliever César Valdez for assignment.

Reliever Joey Krehbiel, claimed off waivers yesterday from the Rays, was optioned to Norfolk.

Urías was a late scratch from the lineup yesterday, but he pinch-hit for reliever Marcos Diplán with two on and two outs in the fourth inning and lined a single up the middle to give the Orioles a 1-0 lead. He thrust himself into the team's 2022 plans by batting .279/.361/.412 with 14 doubles, seven home runs and 38 RBIs in 85 games, going 24-for-69 (.348) with runners in scoring position and playing second base, shortstop and third base.

The Orioles have 10 games remaining after tonight.

Outfielder Anthony Santander was sore after last night's game, but avoided the injured list, which keeps Tyler Nevin off the active roster. Santander chased J.T. Realmuto's line drive into the right field corner with two outs in the bottom of the 10th inning that produced the tying and winning runs and was scored a triple.

"More treatment right now and trending better," said manager Brandon Hyde.

Santander sprained his left ankle on April 20 in Miami and has been hobbled for most of the season. He was shut down the past two Septembers with shoulder and oblique injuries.

Tonight's lineup doesn't include Santander or Jones.

Valdez took the loss last night after attempting his ninth save and first since May 10. He has a 5.87 ERA and 1.652 WHIP in 39 appearances.

Valdez was also designated for assignment on Aug. 20 when the Orioles claimed Chris Ellis off waivers from the Rays. Ellis is battling some arm fatigue, but he didn't go on the IL today and is a candidate to start Sunday against the Rangers at Camden Yards. John Means is listed for Saturday.

Jones slashed .164/.207/.218 in 18 games with the Orioles and .243/.337/.431 in 70 with Norfolk.

Wade made five relief appearances with the Orioles this summer and allowed 11 runs and 14 hits in 8 2/3 innings. He walked four batters and struck out six.

Wade posted a 2.96 ERA and 1.027 WHIP in 20 games (six starts) with Norfolk.

Hyde was down to two available relievers last night in extra innings, Valdez and Brooks Kriske, who's still waiting to debut with the club and become the 60th player used in 2021.

Cole Sulser, Dillon Tate and Conner Greene are available tonight, according to Hyde. Greene was the opener last night and threw 24 pitches in the first inning.

With Keegan Akin on the mound tonight and Zac Lowther and Alexander Wells starting the first two games of the Rangers series at Camden Yards, the Orioles will keep evaluating their younger pitchers and providing experience to a collection of rookies before spring training begins in February.

"It's a good test for Akin tonight with a Phillies team that needs to win," Hyde said. "Just (looking for) improvement overall, general improvement, feeling more comfortable up here, better command from all three. With Keegan, his off-speed stuff has gotten better the second half. I'd like to see that continue to improve. More confidence in his slider and changeup, more depth in his slider.

"With the other guys, they haven't had a ton of appearances, but you'd like to see a little better command out of all three."
