Anthony Rendon to 15-day disabled list, Emmanuel Burriss has contract selected

PHILADELPHIA - After beginning the 2015 season on the disabled list, infielder Anthony Rendon finds himself back on it, this time with a left quad strain.

Rendon missed the first 52 games of the season, recovering from a left knee sprain followed by a left oblique strain, and didn't make his season debut until June 4. In his 18 games this season, he is batting .290/.375/.362, with five doubles, nine walks, five RBIs and nine runs scored. He does not yet have a homer on the year.

The move is retroactive to June 25.

To fill the infield vacancy, the Nationals have selected the contract of veteran Emmanuel Burriss. The 30-year-old had a strong 2014 season at Triple-A Syracuse, batting .300/.377/.412 with six home runs. Through 62 games with the Chiefs this season, he is hitting .278 with eight doubles, five triples, three homers, 25 walks, 10 stolen bases and 21 RBIs.

Burriss also has major league experience, last appearing at the big leagues with the eventual World Series champion Giants in 2012. However, he did not appear in the postseason. While predominantly a middle infielder, he has major league experience at all four infield spots, and has appeared in four games in the outfield.

Burriss is a Washington, D.C., native and a graduate of Woodrow Wilson High School, which is located in the Tenleytown neighborhood of Northwest D.C.

Outfielder Reed Johnson was transferred to the 60-day disabled list.
