SAN FRANCISCO - The Nationals have a bit of different look going on with tonight's lineup. With rookie left-hander Conner Menez starting for the Giants, Davey Martinez has bumped Matt Adams all the way down to the No. 7 spot, behind Kurt Suzuki and Brian Dozier. And he's giving Gerardo Parra a start in right field instead of Adam Eaton, and keeping Parra in the No. 2 spot.
Some of this is byproduct of the makeup of the Nationals bench right now, with two key right-handed hitters injured (Ryan Zimmerman and Howie Kendrick). The good news: Asdrúbal Cabrera is here and is available tonight if needed. To make room for Cabrera on the 25-man roster, the club optioned Adrián Sanchez to Double-A Harrisburg. To make room on the 40-man roster, the Nats designated Kyle Barraclough for assignment.
AnÃbal Sánchez, meanwhile, takes the mound tonight and looks to do what his fellow veteran rotation mates have not done in recent days but his younger rotation mates have: Pitch effectively. Stephen Strasburg and Patrick Corbin each were roughed up by the Diamondbacks over the weekend. Joe Ross and Erick Fedde each did not surrender a run. So we'll see which group Sánchez ends up joining by night's end.
