More home runs for the Nats, more shutout innings for Gonzalez (updated)

Going back to last night, the Nationals hit nine home runs in a 12-inning span against the Cubs. They hit six jacks last night, two of which came off the bat of Adam LaRoche. They added three more through the first three innings tonight, and have a 5-0 lead on the hapless Cubs. All three homers so far tonight came in the third inning. Roger Bernadina led off the frame with a solo shot to center, his fourth on the season. One pitch later, Bryce Harper banged one off the back wall of the Cubs bullpen in left-center, the 13th of the season for the rookie. After a Ryan Zimmerman single (what, you can't join in on the homerfest, Ryan?) LaRoche hit his fifth homer in his last 17 at-bats. The Nats are laying the smack down on the Cubs in the early innings for the second straight night. This was the sixth time since the Nats moved to D.C. in 2005 that they've hit three home runs in an inning. With his home run tonight, Harper matched Ken Griffey Jr. for third most homers by a teenager in major league history, trailing only Tony Conigliaro and Mel Ott. Over his last two games, LaRoche is 7-for-7 with three homers, five RBIs and a walk. Gio Gonzalez, meanwhile, has cut his way through the Cubs lineup with ease, and has yet to allow a hit through five innings. Coming off a complete-game shutout his last time out, Gonzalez has now thrown 14 straight scoreless innings. He's thrown 59 pitches so far and has only allowed one baserunner - Josh Vitters reached on Ian Desmond's throwing error leading off the third. Update: And on the first pitch of the sixth inning, Gonzalez's no-hit bid is over. Darwin Barney lined a single past a diving Ryan Zimmerman to open the inning, bringing the crowd at Nats Park to their feet to salute Gonzalez's effort tonight.
