Inside the Padres:

When the Nationals were in San Diego last month, the Padres were able to take the last two games of the four-game set, kickstarting the Nats' eventual seven-game losing streak on their West Coast road trip. This weekend the Padres are coming to D.C. having been swept in four games by the Cardinals and with the Nats losing two of three to the Dodgers. So one of these teams has to feel better come Sunday evening.

As we get closer to the July 31 trade deadline, the Padres, having already made some deals this season, could still be players. Among the moves San Diego has made of significance since the Nats saw them last is trading closer Fernando Rodney to the National League East rival Marlins. They then shipped arguably their best starting pitcher, Drew Pomeranz, to Boston. Both transaction brought minor league prospects to the Padres' farm system. So who else is on the trading block?

Well, someone who is probably not on the block is first baseman Wil Myers. The 25-year-old is having a breakout season, slashing .277/.347/.505 with 20 home runs and 61 RBIs. His average, on-base percentage and hits lead the team, while his home runs are tied for first. But then you look at the Padres outfielders and you might be able to find some worthy candidates. Melvin Upton Jr. is hitting .260 with 16 homers and 44 RBIs, and Matt Kemp has crushed 20 longballs with 63 RBIs.

On the mound, right-hander Luis Perdomo starts this weekend series for the Padres. The 22-year-old rookie is 3-4 with a 7.36 ERA, with most of his appearances coming out of the bullpen. He made his major league debut on April 4 against the Dodgers, giving up six runs in one inning, and made his first start on May 14 in Milwaukee, giving up two runs in two-plus innings. Former Nationals right-hander Edwin Jackson will start Saturday night's game. After being released by the Marlins on June 2 and signing with the Padres on June 20, Jackson is 1-1 with a 4.76 ERA this season. He went 0-1 with a 5.91 ERA in eight relief appearances in Miami and won his first start with San Diego 5-3 against the Giants. Jackson has pitched 2 2/3 scoreless innings of relief against the Nationals this season.

And the sole left-hander, Christian Friedrich, will get the ball for Sunday's finale. Friedrich is 4-6 with a 4.55 ERA this season, but just 1-5 with a 7.18 ERA over his last six starts. That stretch includes a 7-5 loss to the Nationals in which he gave up six runs in six innings, the Nats' last win before the losing streak.
