Scherzer chosen as an All-Star replacement

Turns out Max Scherzer will get another star turn after all.

The Nationals right-hander was selected as a replacement player for Tuesday's All-Star Game in Denver, Major League Baseball announced Saturday morning.

Scherzer, who is 7-4 with a 2.66 ERA, 0.878 WHIP and 134 strikeouts in 98 innings, is an All-Star for the eighth time in his career. He has been chosen for the Midsummer Classic each season since 2013

He, Dodgers righty Walker Buehler, Brewers righty Freddy Peralta and Mets right-hander Taijuan Walker were selected as replacements for two pitchers - the Giants' Kevin Gausman and the Brewers' Brandon Woodruff - who were named All-Stars but will miss the game because they are scheduled to pitch Sunday. Additionally, the Padres' Yu Darvish and the Mets' Jacob deGrom will miss the game with injuries after being named All-Stars.

The inclusion of Scherzer gives the Nationals four All-Stars. Shortstop Trea Turner and outfielders Juan Soto and Kyle Schwarber were selected to the National League roster, though Schwarber will miss the game because of injury.

Soto is also participating in Monday night's Home Run Derby at Coors Field, taking on the Angels' Shohei Ohtahni in the opening round of the competition.
