Turner finishes second to Seager in Rookie of the Year voting

Trea Turner was phenomenal for half a season. But Corey Seager was great for the full season, and that's why the Dodgers shortstop beat out the Nationals center fielder for National League Rookie of the Year.

Seager was named the winner this evening, a unanimous choice by all 30 voting members of the Baseball Writers' Association of America (two from each NL city) and 150 total points. Turner finished second with 11 second-place votes and nine third-place votes, while Dodgers right-hander Kenta Maeda finished third with 11 second-place votes and four third-place votes.

Seager's victory was little surprise, given his consistently impressive performance through the entire season for Los Angeles. The 22-year-old hit .308 with 26 homers, 72 RBIs, 105 runs, and .877 OPS over 157 games, compiling a WAR of 6.1 that was tops among NL rookies and fifth among all NL players.

Turner, though, made as compelling a case as he could for a guy who spent the first half of the season in the minors. Promoted permanently from Triple-A Syracuse on July 8, he wound up hitting .342 with 13 homers, 40 RBIs, 53 runs, 33 stolen bases and a .937 OPS in only 73 games.

A natural shortstop, Turner also learned how to play center field on the fly, taking over everyday duties at the foreign position and more than holding his own out there. The 23-year-old finished with a WAR of 3.5, according to Baseball-Reference.com.

Maeda made a strong transition from his native Japan to the big leagues this season; the 28-year-old went 16-11 with a 3.48 ERA and 179 strikeouts in 32 starts for the Dodgers.

Others who received votes included the Rockies' Trevor Story (24 points), the Cardinals' Aledmys Diaz (14 points) and three rookies who each received one point: the Rockies' Jon Gray, the Mets' Steven Matz and the Cardinals' Seung Hwan Oh.

Bryce Harper (2012) remains the only player in Nationals club history to win Rookie of the Year. Turner joins Ryan Zimmerman (2006) as runners-up. Wilson Ramos (fourth) and Danny Espinosa (sixth) each received votes in 2011.
