A few postgame notes after the Orioles' 6-5 victory

SARASOTA, Fla. - Adam Jones, Nick Markakis and Robert Andino each drove in two runs today, and Zach Phillips retired the side in order in the top of the ninth inning, striking out two, to preserve the Orioles' 6-5 victory over the Red Sox at Ed Smith Stadium. The Red Sox scored twice against Armando Galarraga over two innings before Phillips entered the game. One run off Galarraga was unearned after shortstop Ryan Flaherty committed his third error of the spring on a shallow fly ball to left field. Galarraga also gave up four hits and walked a batter, and his ERA is 7.20 this spring. The Orioles could release Galarraga rather than assign him to Triple-A Norfolk. His salary could factor into the decision. Jason Hammel threw 59 pitches in two innings and continued to throw in the bullpen until he reached 90. He was removed from the game because he needed 39 pitches to get through the second. The Orioles were able to control his environment in the 'pen. "He's right where he needs to be," manager Buck Showalter said. "He's had a good spring. He's thrown the ball well, really from his first outing." Pitching coach Rick Adair counted 17 foul balls from the Red Sox while Hammel was pitching. Kevin Gregg allowed a run in the sixth, leaving his spring ERA at 5.40. "(Matt) Wieters was saying three or four pitches there were probably strikes," Showalter said. "He's throwing the ball downhill. He's throwing the ball well. He's physically, and everything, he's right where he needs to be. He's fine. We should have made a play behind him." Showalter noticed that Andino has "a little extra pep in his step" playing shortstop the last two days. "It's really as much about getting his arm stretched back out," Showalter said. "You can get a little short-armed at second. Helps him with the relays." J.J. Hardy will start at shortstop on Saturday after sitting out the last two games with a sore right arm. Some teammates were teasing Markakis about his wind-blown home run. He replied that it would have been a double in Boston and he was working on his Fenway Park swing. Showalter has two lineups written for Saturday's game against the Nationals. One includes Markakis as the designated hitter. It depends on how he's feeling in the morning. "You can tell he's moving around more without thinking about it," Showalter said.
