A little more on Pie, plus Berken and the doubleheader

The Orioles are hoping that Felix Pie clears waivers and accepts an outright assignment to Triple-A Norfolk. Manager Buck Showalter just met with reporters before tonight's game in Minnesota. He talked about the risk of designating Pie for assignment. "The bad side of that is somebody could pick him up or he could become a free agent," Showalter said. "But we got to a point where if he can't get at-bats and get back to being what he's capable of being, it wasn't going to work out for him. We'll find out Thursday and see where it takes us. We tried to explain that to him. He's probably too close to it right now. "Matt (Angle) has had a good year and is a little bit better fit for us where we're going right now." Showalter saw a much better version of Pie last year. "You know the potential is there, but we had to create a scenario where he can get back to being that guy," Showalter said. "There's some risk involved, but just about everything is. We've got to get him back into that mode, and there's really no way to do that here with Nolan (Reimold) and the way we're set up. "He just never got as relaxed as he was last year, for some reason. Sometimes, it's about productivity. You're not having success. I kept trying to give him rope and see if he'd run with it. "Matt fits a need. He can do a lot of things. But he'll go through some growing pains, too." Also, the MRA on Jason Berken's right elbow didn't reveal any structural damage. He's just dealing with some inflammation and will probably have a cortisone injection. Left-handers Brian Matusz and Zach Britton are scheduled to start Saturday's doubleheader against the Yankees at Camden Yards.
