SAN DIEGO - It took only two pitches for Adam Jones to remind everyone how much he loves playing against the Paders, and especially in his hometown.
Jones drove a 90 mph fastball from Padres starter Erik Johnson over the right-center field fence at Petco Park to give the Orioles a 1-0 lead.
Jones' ball traveled an estimated distance of 398 feet and made him 17-for-38 (.447) lifetime against the Padres with a double, three home runs, eight RBIs and 10 runs scored. He's 12-for-21 (.571) with three home runs, six RBIs and seven runs scored at Petco Park.
Jones and Brady Anderson are tied for sixth place on the Orioles' all-time home run list with 209.
The Padres turned the leadoff tables in the bottom of the first when Melvin Upton, Jr. homered off Ubaldo Jimenez to tie the game. His ball traveled an estimated 444 feet to center field.
The Orioles lead the majors with 52 home runs this month, three short of the major league record set by the Athletics in 1996. The record for any month is 58 shared by the Orioles in May 1987 and the Mariners in May 1999.
Seven different Orioles have hit five or more home runs this month - Jones (11), Chris Davis (eight), Mark Trumbo (seven), Pedro Alvarez (six), Manny Machado (five), Jonathan Schoop (five) and Matt Wieters (five).
"I don't really think about it," said manager Buck Showalter. "It's kind of like sacrifice bunting or whatever you do according to the skills of your guys. We did our run manufacturing for a while. We're done for a while. No. Hitting a home run's manufacturing a run, too. Is that a form of small ball? I love when they say 'small ball.'
"I don't look at it. I'm aware it's a strength of ours. What helps is when they're not solo and you've got people on base, and that requires on-base percentage. That's one of the reasons why (Hyun Soo) Kim's hitting eighth tonight. I think he's leading our club in on-base percentage."
This is true. Kim's registered a .424 on-base percentage in 36 games. Machado has a .384 OBP in 71 games and Davis has a .355 OBP in 74 games.
The Orioles normally rank near or at the bottom in the majors in OBP, but they're currently seventh at .332, which is good for second in the American League. The Red Sox lead the majors at .355.
Fifty-two home runs were hit on Sunday. According to the Elias Sports Bureau, it marked the highest total for a single day in more than 10 years. Fifty-four were hit on June 11, 2006.
Davis and Frank Robinson are tied for ninth place on the Orioles all-time home run list with 179. Ken Singleton is eighth with 182.
The Red Sox won tonight and are four games behind the Orioles in the AL East.
Update: The Orioles took a 2-1 lead in the fourth inning on Schoop's leadoff double a wild pitch and Davis' sacrifice fly that also produced his 51st RBI.
Update II: Hyun Soo Kim hit his second major league home run, a two-run shot in the fifth after J.J. Hardy's single to give the Orioles a 4-1 lead.
Upton robbed Hardy of a two-run homer in the second and doubled up Mark Trumbo at first base.
Update III: Chris Davis led off the sixth inning with his 19th home run to give the Orioles a 5-1 lead and Kim added an RBI double to pad the margin.
Davis has 600 career RBIs. He passed Frank Robinson for ninth on the club's all-time home run list with 180.
The Orioles need one more home run to tie the A's record for the most in June.
Jimenez allowed one run and three hits in five innings, with four walks, five strikeouts and a home run. He threw 87 pitches, 49 for strikes.
Update IV: The Orioles sent 12 batters to the plate in sixth and took an 11-1 lead. Schoop collected his third hit, an RBI double, to raise his average to .299, Machado had a two-run single and Mark Trumbo drove in a run with an infield hit after Davis' ground rule double.
The Orioles have scored in double figures in back-to-back games and in three of the last nine. Schoop is 21-for-42 in his last 10 games.
Update V: Wil Myers hit a three-run homer off Oliver Drake with two outs in the seventh to reduce the lead to 11-4.
Update VI: The Orioles defeated the Padres 11-7 to run their winning streak to six games. They moved 16 above .500.
T.J. McFarland gave up three runs with two outs in the ninth.
Jimenez has won back-to-back starts for the first time since Sept. 4 and 9, 2015.
The Orioles pounded out 17 hits. They continue to lead the American League East by 4 1/2 games.
