AGon not gone; Werth off the board

Reports indicate that the Red Sox couldn't reach agreement on a contract extension with first baseman Adrian Gonzalez, so their deal with the Padres could be dead. What does this mean for the Orioles? If they had any ideas about making a run at third baseman Adrian Beltre, and I have no indications that they're willing to hand over a five-year contract, they better do so in a hurry. You know the Red Sox will go hard after Beltre if they can't resuscitate the Gonzalez talks. SI.com's Jon Heyman tweeted that the Padres won't field any more offers for Gonzalez if they can't complete the deal with the Red Sox. And if Boston can't sign him to an extension, I don't like the Orioles' chances. Also, the Nationals reportedly agreed to terms with Jayson Werth on a seven-year, $126 million deal, and they'll hold a news conference in a few minutes to make the announcement. Reporters here are stunned. The Nationals hadn't been linked to Werth, but once they lost Adam Dunn, they made an aggressive play for the former Orioles' first-round draft pick. The Orioles drafted a player who eventually earned a contract worth $18 million a year. Too bad he's collecting it from another organization. Or is it? The deal is getting panned by plenty of folks here. That's a lot of money and years for Jayson Werth. But the Nats came out swinging here in Orlando. We'll see if they regret it later.
