Arrieta again fails to clear the fourth (O's lose 9-7)

Jake Arrieta got plenty of run support tonight. Manager Buck Showalter didn't think it was going to be enough. Showalter yanked Arrieta with two outs in the fourth inning, a runner on base and the Orioles leading, 7-5. Luis Ayala gave up an RBI single to Torii Hunter to complete Arrieta's line, and he surrendered two runs of his own, as the Angels took an 8-7 lead. Arrieta has gone 3 2/3 innings in his last two starts and allowed a combined 11 runs and 13 hits. And he almost sent his manager over the edge. Arrieta gave up a run in the bottom of the first inning after the Orioles handed him a 1-0 lead. He walked the first two batters in the second and both of them scored after the Orioles handed him a 4-1 lead. He walked Alberto Callaspo, leading off the fourth, and the Angels eventually scored five runs after the Orioles handed him a 7-3 lead. Showalter stomped to the mound after the walk to Callaspo, and he wasn't there to give Arrieta a hand. He delivered a harsh message, returned to the dugout and continued to fume. Normally, the pitching coach makes the first mound visit in an inning, but Showalter wanted to handle this matter himself. Between the poor pitching and poor umpiring - we've seen two blown calls so far - Showalter is ready to rip the dugout phone off the wall and bite it in half. The Orioles have belted three home runs tonight off Angels starter Garrett Richards, who's allowed seven runs and nine hits in four innings. Matt Wieters launched a three-run shot in the top of the fourth that gave Arrieta a nice cushion, but it's been deflated. Richards could give up 20 runs tonight if manager Mike Scioscia leaves him in the game. I'm still not sure it will be enough. In his last start, Arrieta allowed five runs and eight hits in 3 2/3 innings against the Indians. Before that, he held the Nationals to one run over six innings. Before that, he allowed four runs in seven innings against the Mets. Before that, he held the Pirates to one run over seven innings. Before that, he was supposed to be assigned to the bullpen, but never made it out there. Now what will Showalter do with him? Update: Richards is out of the game after drilling Mark Reynolds in the back of the left hand in the fifth inning. Reynolds collapsed in the dirt and was writhing in pain, but he stayed in the game. Let's see if he finishes it. Chris Davis was scratched from the lineup. Reynolds could wake up tomorrow and not be able to make a fist. No roster moves could turn into one or two.
