Orioles manager Buck Showalter named Miguel Gonzalez as Sunday's starter against the White Sox at U.S. Cellular Field. Bud Norris was lined up to make the start, but Gonzalez is moving ahead of him.
Showalter also said Kevin Gausman will accompany the team to Chicago. He didn't promise that Gausman will get another start, but the right-hander is staying with the club and appears to be staying in the rotation.
The Orioles won't add another reliever before Friday night's game, so Norris could remain in the bullpen as a seventh reliever. Stay tuned.
Gausman shut out the Rangers on four hits over 6 1/3 innings, but the Orioles lost 2-0 before 31,915 at Camden Yards. It's the first time they've been blanked by the Rangers since April 10, 2011 in Baltimore.
Chaz Roe gave up two runs in the ninth after replacing Brian Matusz in the eighth and stranding two runners.
Here's a Showalter sampling:
On Gausman:
"Good, real good. He was using both depths with his fastball. We talked before, pitching down all the time isn't always (good). Good hitters get their arms extended. But he changed eye levels a lot with his fastball, which I thought was really good. Something he and Wally (Dave Wallace) have been working on. He was really good. We had talked around 90 pitches tonight. He gave us a really good effort. He gave us a chance to win. We just obviously didn't put much together offensively. (Yovani) Gallardo came off another good start, so we knew we were going to be challenged tonight there. We got the type of pitching that gives you a chance."
On Gausman working on short rest:
"He threw a lot more the time before, so he was fine to go 90, we thought. We spent a lot of time getting him ready for this. We knew it was coming when the rainout happened. He was good. Maybe we should do it again the same way."
On whether Gausman gets another start:
"You can question it. It's never premature to question it. He pitched well and he's going with us to Chicago. We'll see how it works out."
On Roe:
"They've got some good hitters. They all have power. That's the big thing about lineups up here compared to below. There are nine guys in most lineups who can leave the ballpark. I'm not going to question him. He's been solid for us. I thought he was again tonight. He came back and ... I thought the tack-on run was big there where we were in the bullpen. We were not going to use Zach (Britton) tonight, so we had to do some things a little bit differently."
On removing Darren O'Day and Matusz allowing two left-handed hitters to reach base:
"It does matter because it creates more pitches for Chaz. I don't believe that those things don't matter because you may get out of it, but it gives Chaz a second up and Darren had around 20 pitches. We're trying to have him available tomorrow. With where we are in the bullpen, we had to do some things a little differently tonight. We knew going into the game. If we had Zach to pitch the ninth inning it might have been a little different. Darren can defend himself there, but that's a job that Brian needs to be able to do for us, and has."
On wasted opportunities early against Gallardo:
"I think he threw about 55 percent sliders tonight. We knew that coming in. He's a hard breaking ball pitcher. Some of them were borderline cutters. He throws that a lot behind in the count. We hit some balls hard that they caught. We had two line drives to first base and one was a double play. We could have gone ahead here. Their center fielder is really impressive, ran down two or three that some guys don't."
On the defense:
"What a great game we had defensively. David (Lough) made two great plays that not many left fielders make. Even the ball coming in looks semi-routine, but it's not, especially where he's playing. Manny (Machado) made some really difficult plays look easy. The ball they gave him an error on, if he dives for that ball it's a base hit. In hindsight, maybe that's what he should have done so they don't give him an error. (Chris) Parmelee has been playing a great first base for us."
