Alex Burnett is in the Orioles clubhouse and Jake Arrieta just left Orioles manager Buck Showalter's office. Draw your own conclusions.
We were waiting for a roster move, and that could be it. Nothing official yet, but it looks like there is a No. 68 jersey waiting for Burnett.
Burnett is a 25-year-old right-hander who was claimed off waivers from the Blue Jays on April 12. Ironically, tonight's opponent is the Blue Jays. He's 8-11 with a 4.61 ERA in 174 career major league games with the Twins, and has posted a 0.00 ERA in six innings this season between Triple-A Buffalo and Norfolk.
Burnett's stay could be a short one. He's likely here to fortify the bullpen as a long man for a couple of days until the Orioles make another move to bring up a starter for Wednesday afternoon's game.
Here are tonight's lineups:
For the Blue Jays:
Munenori Kawasaki SS
Melky Cabrera LF
Jose Bautista RF
Edwin Encarnacion 1B
Adam Lind DH
J.P. Arencibia C
Colby Rasmus CF
Brett Lawrie 3B
Emilio Bonifacio 2B
J.A. Happ LHP
For the Orioles:
Nick Markakis RF
Manny Machado 3B
Adam Jones CF
Matt Wieters C
Chris Davis 1B
J.J. Hardy SS
Steve Pearce DH
Nolan Reimold LF
Alexi Casilla 2B
Chris Tillman RHP
Update: The Orioles have officially sent Arrieta to Triple-A Norfolk and called up Burnett.
Arrieta, who has started each of the team's last three home openers, struggled in his first four starts this season, going 1-1 with a 6.63 ERA. He lasted no more than five innings in any appearance.
