Castillo may be headed to disabled list again

The Orioles may place catcher Welington Castillo on the 10-day disabled list later today.

Castillo spent last night in the emergency room after he was hit in the groin by a deflected pitch that initially struck Yankees shortstop Didi Gregorius on the arm. The head athletic trainers for both teams raced onto the field to attend to the injured players.

Castillo stayed in the game, but he later required medical attention.

Manager Buck Showalter said Castillo has a "hematoma" and the injury isn't as serious as the one sustained last summer by catcher Caleb Joseph that cost him a month of the season.

The Orioles have a catcher in place for tonight's game, most likely Francisco Peña, and will be adding him to the roster. It's just a question of whether they go with three catchers or put Castillo on the disabled list.

Peña went 4-for-7 with the Orioles before they designated him for assignment and outrighted him to Norfolk.

The Orioles have an opening on their 40-man roster, so no corresponding move is necessary.

This would be Castillo's second trip to the disabled list this season, the first on May 3 caused by tendinitis in his right shoulder. He's batting .317/.339/.467 with six doubles, four home runs and 17 RBIs in 29 games.

Castillo is second among American League catchers in All-Star Game balloting behind the Royals' Salvador Perez.

Joseph is catching tonight. The Orioles lost their emergency backstop when infielder Ryan Flaherty went on the disabled list with a strained right shoulder.

Reliever Logan Verrett, optioned earlier today, will report to Norfolk on Friday. Mike Wright will be available in the Orioles bullpen after they recalled him this afternoon.
