Chen still stingy with the runs (O's win 3-1)

Orioles left-hander Wei-Yin Chen has made two starts since coming off the disabled list, both of them against the Texas Rangers. He's allowed two runs and 11 hits in 13 1/3 innings. In three career starts against the Rangers - tonight was the first in Arlington - Chen has surrendered only three earns runs in 21 innings. Tonight was a bit of a struggle, but Chen registered his seventh quality start of the season. He allowed one run and eight hits in 6 1/3 innings, with two walks and three strikeouts. Manager Buck Showalter called upon Darren O'Day after Ian Kinsler doubled with one out on Chen's 102nd pitch of the night. O'Day retired the next two batters. He's stranded 14 of 19 inherited runners this season. He's retired 35 of 45 first batters faced. Chen's ERA is down to 2.67. He's allowed one earned run or fewer in his last three starts, and in five of his last seven. He's permitted two earned runs or fewer in six of his last seven. The Rangers are 0-for-9 with runners in scoring position tonight and have stranded eight runners. The Orioles still lead 3-1. Update: The Orioles started the second half with a 3-1 victory over the Rangers. Jim Johnson stranded two runners in the ninth inning to record his 106th save and break a tie with Tippy Martinez for second place in franchise history. He hit Ian Kinsler with two outs to put runners on first and second, but Elvis Andrus bounced into a force. Johnson has 34 saves this season. The Orioles have won five of their last six game to improve to 54-43. Showalter became the fourth manager in major league history to record at least 250 wins with four different teams, joining Joe Torre, Gene Mauch and Dick Williams.
