DH slot still not hot (O's trail 2-1)

NEW YORK - Lots and lots of good seats remain for tonight's game, so if you're near Yankee Stadium, stop by and take in the ambiance.
Steve Pearce stepped to the plate in the second inning with two runners on base and two outs in a scoreless game. He struck out.
Pearce is 0-for-11 this season, and Orioles designated hitters are 1-for-31. Nolan Reimold has the only hit.
Reimold singled tonight before Pearce batted, but he's starting in left field.
Chris Davis also singled in the inning, raising his average to .419 as he makes that push for the Triple Crown.

Nick Markakis bounced to the mound leading off the first inning, his first at-bat against CC Sabathia since the Yankees veteran hit him on the left thumb in September and ended his season.
A home run tonight would have been a fractured fairy tale of sorts.
It appeared that Eduardo Nunez might have fractured his right wrist after being hit by a Miguel Gonzalez pitch in the second inning. He took first base, but Jayson Nix replaced him at shortstop in the top of the third.
Fans booed, of course, because that's what they do when one of their players is drilled. And especially after last night's Dodgers-Padres brawl. And especially because they might have been primed for Markakis-Sabathia II.
Gonzalez didn't hit Nunez intentionally. The ball rode in and Nunez strode into it. A perfect storm.
Update: The Orioles have taken a 1-0 lead in the third inning on Manny Machado's one-out single off Sabathia.
Alexi Casilla led off with a double to left field. Markakis struck out and Machado bounced a single into right field.
Nice piece of hitting by Machado. He slapped the ball past second baseman Robinson Cano, who was shaded toward the middle.
Update II: Gonzalez isn't particularly sharp. He's allowed one run and three hits in three innings, with three walks, one strikeout and one hit batter. He's thrown 60 pitches, 32 for strikes.
Four straight Yankees reached with one out in the third. Kevin Youkilis had an RBI single, but he did Gonzalez a favor by getting caught in a rundown.
Update III: Cano's RBI single in the fifth inning gave New York a 2-1 lead.
Gonzalez has allowed two runs and five hits in five innings, with four walks, three strikeouts and a hit batter. He's thrown 85 pitches, 51 for strikes.

Sabathia is dealing. He struck out five in a row and retired eight straight before Machado's infield hit in the sixth. Machado had been the last Orioles baserunner with his RBI single in the third.
