Yovani Gallardo's right shoulder felt good again after playing catch yesterday from 90 feet. He's going to move back to 120 feet Wednesday and Thursday - going back-to-back for the first time - and may throw off a mound on Sunday.
A Gallardo update was the biggest piece of news to come out of this afternoon's clubhouse access and media session with manager Buck Showalter.
The tarp remains on the field at Camden Yards, but the Orioles expect the rain to clear out around 6 p.m.
Paul Janish is making his second start tonight since the Orioles purchased his contract. He's playing third base for the first time since appearing in 36 games with the Braves in 2013, though he made only two starts at the hot corner.
Janish has started 14 games at third base and made 57 appearances. He's also made 13 starts and appeared in 22 games at second base. Janish primarily is a shortstop, where he's made 268 starts and appeared in 358 games over parts of eight seasons in the majors.
Showalter seems to prefer keeping Manny Machado at one position, which has been shortstop since J.J. Hardy went on the disabled list with a hairline fracture in his left foot. Janish says he's ready for any assignment.
"I did most of my third base when I was in Atlanta and I played it quite a bit that year," Janish said. "Every close game I was going in. At the time it was Chris Johnson. It's just been a while since I've done it.
"Over the course of my career it hasn't really bothered me. It's just that historically speaking I'm usually the guy who goes to short and somebody else goes somewhere else. I don't have a ton of experience relatively compared to playing short, but honestly, it doesn't bother me that much.
"I had a harder time adjusting to second earlier in my career, for whatever reason, turning the double play from a different angle and whatever. Third, not to take anything away from it. Obviously, it's different and you're closer and things happen fast, but it wasn't as big an adjustment for me."
Janish heard from Showalter on Sunday that he'd be playing third base tonight.
"He mentioned that that would probably be the case," Janish said. "I'd probably play and in all likelihood it would be at third. He also kind of said when I got here that he wasn't 100 percent sure how things were going to unfold, where I'd play, whether Manny would stay at short or go to third.
"For me, my mentality about everything is just not to worry about it. Instead of anticipating one thing or another, just say, 'Who cares? Whatever's going to happen is going to happen and then adjust on the fly. Historically, that seems to work better for me, because as soon as you start expecting something or anticipating something, something else happens. So, it doesn't bother me. I'm excited to play. Hopefully, the weather holds up. We'll see what unfolds."
A Platinum Glove winner is a tough act to follow at third base, but Ryan Flaherty and Pedro Alvarez have done it. Why not Janish?
"You know, the easiest way to say it is just catch it and throw it," he said, grinning. "Trying to duplicate anything that somebody like Manny does is probably a lost cause, so we're just not going to worry too much about it."
