The Orioles grabbed a 1-0 lead against the Blue Jays in the bottom of the second inning on consecutive one-out doubles by Vladimir Guerrero and Matt Wieters. It lasted three batters. Orioles starter Tommy Hunter walked No. 9 hitter Mike McCoy, who eventually scored after Yunel Escobar's double and Eric Thames' ground ball. Not satisfied with a tie, the Blue Jays pushed across the go-ahead run on Jose Bautista's single. Remember how Toronto rookie Henderson Alvarez recorded 22 of his 24 outs last night on ground balls and strikeouts? Luis Perez has recorded seven of his nine outs today on fly balls or strikeouts. Nick Markakis needs a hit today to extend his consecutive-series streak to 183. He's 0-for-2 against Perez. Juan Pierre had a hit in 241 consecutive series from 2003 to 2007. Robert Andino singled in the third inning today after it appeared that he flied to center field. Toronto catcher J.P. Arencibia called time, which led to some confusion in the press box. That's what happens when you update your scorecard while the center fielder is camped under the ball. Left-hander Zach Phillips turned in a scoreless inning last night in his major league debut, but he allowed two hits and walked a batter. "Very nervous, but definitely glad to get it out of the way," he said. "I just knew I had to get out there and get the ball over the plate." Edwin Encarnacion doubled, and umpires reviewed the play to determine whether they should change the ruling to a home run. What was Phillips thinking during the delay? "Didn't really think about that," he replied. "Just focused on the next hitter, getting him out. I just kind of looked around and took the moment in." The Orioles acquired Phillips from the Rangers earlier this summer for infielder Nick Green. "Getting traded was actually a blessing in disguise," he said. "I saw this as a better opportunity over here and I'm glad it happened." Update: The Blue Jays lead, 4-1, in the fourth. Brett Lawrie and Arenciba had consecutive doubles with one out, and Yunel Escobar delivered an RBI single with two outs. Update III: Matt Wieters followed with his 16th - the fourth time this season that the Orioles have hit back-to-back homers. Combined estimated distances of the Guerrero and Wieters home runs: 840 feet. Mark Reynolds has struck out twice today to increase his club single-season record to 163. He's struck out six times and walked twice in his last eight plate appearances.
