Guthrie remains hospitalized

Orioles president of baseball operations Andy MacPhail received an encouraging report from head athletic trainer Richie Bancell earlier today concerning pitcher Jeremy Guthrie, who missed the home opener after being diagnosed with a form of pneumonia. "I was told there's no infection, which is good news. Nothing terribly contagious. He's doing better. All of that is a plus," MacPhail said. Guthrie is expected to remain hospitalized overnight, but could be released tomorrow. Brad Bergesen will take Guthrie's turn in the rotation tomorrow night against the Tigers. Guthrie provided an update about four hours ago on his Twitter account: "Still feeling pretty crummy this am. Thanks for all the thoughts & prayers. My wife & hospital staff are taking really good care of me!" The Orioles are hoping that Guthrie will be able to pitch on Sunday. They won't make a roster move unless he remains unavailable. "We've just got to wait it out," MacPhail said. Guthrie blanked the Rays on three hits over eight innings in Friday night's season-opener at Tropicana Field. He's part of a rotation that's allowed only two runs in 26 innings through four games.
