Double-A Harrisburg Senators outfielder Destin Hood was slowed last week when he was under the weather and missed a doubleheader. But now Hood is dealing with a physical injury, and he hasn't played since May 24.
Senators manager Matt Lecroy talked about Hood's injury with me Sunday on "Nats Insider," heard on 106.7 The Fan.
"He is going through a wrist issue," Lecroy said. "He has been pretty solid. His average is not where he would like. The way he drives in runs and his quality of at-bats have been off the charts. His defense play has been pretty (good) too."
Lecroy said Hood would visit a doctor Monday. What they found was not good news, because the Senators placed outfielder on the disabled list, retroactive to May 25. There was no corresponding move, so Harrisburg was down to 24 on the roster. There are no further details on how serious Hood's wrist injury is.
Also working through an injury is infielder Jeff Kobernus. Lecroy said they are watching Kobernus' status and being careful with him as well.
"Kobernus has been bothered with a thumb (injury)," Lecroy said. "He hasn't played the last four games. We are resting him on the precautionary side to make sure he is healthy when he comes back.
"He has had a solid year so far. The way he prepares every day for each game is just showing his maturity as a player. Hopefully, when we get him back, he can get going."
So, with Hood and Kobernus out, Lecroy only has 23 players to work with each game. The numbers are similar recently for both injured players. Hood is averaging .220 through 41 games, but just .175 last 10 games. Kobernus is batting .281 through 43 games, but just .103 (4-for-39) the last 10 games.
It is important to get both players back healthy, as it is with any prospect in the system. Also, they want to make sure Kobernus and Hood aren't dealing with long-term issues. With Hood, placing the outfielder on the disabled list with a wrist "issue" is obviously the bigger concern now.
