Hunter's scoreless streak ends (O's lose 8-4)

The Orioles are on the verge of being swept at home in a two-game series against the San Diego Padres. Marinate in that one for a while. Tommy Hunter served up a two-run homer to Alexi Amarista in the top of the seventh inning to leave the Orioles in a 7-2 hole. They got one run back in the bottom half on Adam Jones' RBI single. They still have six outs left. Let's see what they do with them. Hunter committed a throwing error with one out in the seventh, fielding Kyle Blanks bouncer to the left of the mound, setting his feet and firing a 110 mph fastball that pulled Chris Davis off the bag. Amarista launched a ball into the Orioles bullpen, and any comeback attempt just got more complicated. Hunter hadn't allowed a run in his last 10 appearances and 16 1/3 innings. The Orioles kept squandering scoring opportunities as the Padres slowly pulled away. Jones hit into a double play to end the fifth after the Orioles put runners on first and second with one out. Chris Davis led off the sixth with a double and Matt Wieters walked, but Padres reliever Dale Thayer entered the game and retired the next three batters on a fly ball, strikeout and pop up. Flaherty struck out for the second time today. Manny Machado has doubled twice and singled today - his fourth three-hit game in the last five. He's batting .339. Machado now has 16 doubles, one behind Boston's Mike Napoli for the major league lead. Machado's second double today came with one out in the seventh inning, and Jones grounded a single into left field off reliever Anthony Bass to reduce the Padres' lead to 7-3. The Orioles had been 1-for-8 with runners in scoring position before Jones' single. They've stranded eight. The Padres are 7-13 on the road this season. The Orioles have their work cut out for them if they're going to lower that record to 7-14. Today's attendance: 32,418 Update: Pedro Strop gave up a run in the top of the ninth and the Orioles scored once in the bottom half. That wasn't enough to prevent a sweep. San Diego 8, Orioles 4. Machado doubled again and scored on Nick Markakis' double to account for the final margin. Machado is tied with Napoli for the major league lead with 17 doubles. His four hits ties a career high. He also collected four on April 28 against Oakland. The three doubles is a career high. It's accurate to say that Machado was a lone bright spot today for the Orioles.
