Injury updates on Rizer and Baumler (plus Orioles notes)

Triple-A Norfolk outfielder Johnny Rizer, the Orioles’ seventh-round draft pick in 2019 out of Texas Christian University, underwent hip surgery last week in Philadelphia and is out for the remainder of the season.

The Orioles made the announcement this afternoon.

Rizer appeared in 22 games with the Tides and went 14-for-72 (.194) with five home runs and 12 RBIs in 81 plate appearances. He hit a combined .253/.312/.423 last summer with 15 doubles, three triples, 14 home runs and 53 RBIs in 98 games between Double-A Bowie (83) and Single-A Aberdeen.

Carter Baumler, a fifth-round selection in 2020 out of Dowling Catholic High in Iowa, will miss his next start at Single-A Delmarva due to right shoulder inflammation.

Baumler didn’t begin his professional career until this year after undergoing Tommy John surgery. He’s allowed two earned runs, walked seven batters and struck out 20 in 11 2/3 innings.

Outfielder Heston Kjerstad is batting .422/.481/.600 (19-for-45) with five doubles and a home run in 12 games with Delmarva. He’s healthy and producing as the Orioles anticipated after making him the second-overall pick in 2020.

Left-hander Bruce Zimmermann is starting tonight for Norfolk.

In Seattle, the Orioles will try to register their sixth win in the last seven games and move within four of .500 for the first time since May 12.

They’re 35-40 after needing 100 games to reach 35 victories last summer.

A 14-10 record in June guarantees the first winning month since Aug. 2017.

Dean Kremer has made four starts and posted a 1.71 ERA and 1.238 WHIP in 21 innings, and he’s allowed only one home run. He hasn’t surrendered a run in his last two starts over 11 2/3 innings.

Kremer faced the Mariners twice last summer. He allowed four runs in three innings at Camden Yards and one run and two hits in six innings in Seattle.

Orioles pitching has held opponents to 22 runs in the last 11 games, with seven scored by the Rays on June 18.

Adley Rutschman has six consecutive games with an extra-base hit to tie Ryan Mountcastle (2021) and Chito Martínez (1991) for the longest streak by an Orioles rookie.

In his last 15 games, Rutschman has collected 10 doubles, three home runs and nine RBIs with 10 runs scored.

Austin Hays’ 23 RBIs in June rank second in the majors behind Yordan Álvarez’s 26. Meanwhile, he’s out of the top 20 in All-Star voting.

Cedric Mullins’ nine doubles this month are tied for sixth in the majors.

The Orioles have hit back-to-back home runs seven times this season, with Mountcastle involved in four. Their five homers last night tied a season high and were the most in a road game since Sept. 23, 2019 in Toronto.

They hadn’t hit five home runs against Seattle since totaling six on May 28, 1996 at Kingdome.

Anthony Santander cleared the right field fence last night to conclude a 12-pitch at-bat, tied for the second longest by an Orioles player that ended with a home run.

Brady Anderson homered off the Rays’ Tanyon Sturtze on the 14^th pitch on Aug. 5, 2000, Mark Reynolds homered off the Nationals’ Todd Coffey on the 12^th pitch on June 19, 2011, Brian Roberts homered off Cleveland’s Josh Tomlin on the 12^th pitch on Aug. 11, 2010 and Billy Ripken homered off the Mariners’ Erik Hanson on the 12^th pitch on Sept. 4, 1990.

Ripken was the only one to do it at home.

The Orioles faced 43 consecutive batters last night at T-Mobile Park without allowing a hit, walk or hit by pitch before Cal Raleigh's home run in the fifth inning, the longest streak by a major league team in any ballpark in the last 40 years.

Mariners left-hander Robbie Ray is 6-6 with a 4.07 ERA and 1.180 WHIP in 15 starts.

Ray, last year’s American League Cy Young Award winner, faced the Orioles on June 1 and allowed four runs and six hits with six strikeouts in five innings. Rougned Odor hit a three-run homer.

This is Ray’s seventh career start against the Orioles. He’s 2-3 with a 5.34 ERA and 1.681 WHIP with 44 strikeouts in 30 1/3 innings.
