Josh Bell's wild ride (with Britton update)

BRADENTON, Fla. - With the time change last weekend, Josh Bell might want to set his clock back 24 hours. He's having a bad, bad day. I already wrote about Bell's error and his mental lapse on a rundown. He just got tagged out in the fourth inning as Felix Pie drew a walk. Bell was running on the pitch, slid into second and assumed that he was out. He didn't realize that Pie had taken ball four. Bell got up and started to jog toward the dugout, realized his mistake and got caught in a rundown. Score the play 6-5-4-6. Bell almost made his second error in the bottom of the fourth inning. He fielded Ronny Cedeno's bouncer and unleashed a high throw to Brandon Snyder, who made a leaping catch and applied the tag. Bell singled in his second at-bat, but I don't think that's enough to satisfy manager Buck Showalter or president of baseball operations Andy MacPhail, who's watching the game from a booth beside the press box. UPDATE: Zach Britton tossed five scoreless innings against Tampa Bay Rays Single-A hitters at the minor league complex, scattering four hits, walking one and striking out three. He faced a few extra batters in the second and third innings to satisfy pitch count requirements. Britton still hasn't allowed a run in 14 innings, though minor league games don't count in the official statistics. And especially when you're facing Single-A hitters. Chris Tillman is done after four innings and 71 pitches, 43 for strikes. He allowed one unearned run and three hits, walked three and struck out two. Matt Wieters singled in the fifth and was thrown out trying to go to second while Nolan Reimold advanced to third. Reimold led off with an infield single, his second hit of the day. Reimold is running like he never had Achilles surgery.
