Your new major league leader in home runs is Nelson Cruz.
Still a bargain.
Manny Machado led off the bottom of the fifth with his second home run of the season, an opposite-field shot that barely cleared the out-of-town scoreboard, and Cruz connected for his 16th with one out. Indians starter Trevor Bauer was done.
Cruz broke a tie with injured White Sox rookie Jose Abreu for the home run lead. He also leads the American League with 44 RBIs. Miami's Giancarlo Stanton began the day with 47.
Machado's other home run came on May 9.
To review: Jonathan Schoop also collected his first RBI since May 9 and Steve Pearce collected his second RBI since May 9.
Must have been a big day.
Pearce is 3-for-3, his first three-hit game since... May 1.
Sorry.
Pearce is now batting .339. He figures to start at first base again Monday afternoon against Milwaukee right-hander Kyle Lohse.
Please don't ask me what happened to Chris Davis or I'll know you weren't paying attention.
Miguel Gonzalez has thrown 79 pitches in five innings. He retired 11 of 13 batters before David Murphy singled leading off the fifth.
Down on the farm, Triple-A Norfolk's Kevin Gausman hasn't allowed a run in four innings in Gwinnett. He's permitted two hits, walked none and struck out two. He's thrown 60 pitches, 41 for strikes.
Update: Gonzalez allowed two runs and four hits in six innings, with four walks, four strikeouts and a hit batter. He threw 100 pitches, 57 for strikes.
Preston Guilmet is working the seventh.
Gausman has allowed three hits over five scoreless innings for Norfolk, with no walks and two strikeouts.
Update II: Game over. Zach Britton records his second career save in the Orioles' 4-2 win over the Indians that salvages a split of the four-game series.
Britton retired the side in order. Head athletic trainer Richie Bancells checked on him after he fielded Ryan Raburn's chopper and made a strong throw to first base for the second out, but he stayed in the game.
Guilmet tossed a scoreless seventh, walking one batter. He's retired 15 of 16 batters with the Orioles.
Brian Matusz allowed a single in a scoreless eighth. Nick Swisher popped up and is 1-for-22 lifetime against Matusz.
Gausman tossed six shutout innings today at Gwinnett, allowing four hits, walking none and striking out three. He threw 88 pitches, 62 for strikes.
The Orioles improve to 2-6 on Sundays and 6-12 in day games.
