Machado staying at third base (and other notes)

The Orioles continue to wait on the weather before making a roster move involving shortstop J.J. Hardy and the infielder that's replacing him on the 25-man roster.

Manager Buck Showalter indicated that he wants to keep Manny Machado at third base and evaluate Rubén Tejada at shortstop. Showalter left open the possibility that Machado could play shortstop later, but it's not in the immediate plans.

Showalter felt that it was taxing on Machado last season to move him between third base and shortstop.

Showalter also reminded the media that Jonathan Schoop played shortstop in the minors.

Reliever Darren O'Day threw a bullpen session today. He's scheduled for a simulated game on Wednesday and could come off the disabled list on Friday.

Infielder Ryan Flaherty had a setback today in Sarasota. He tried to throw beyond 60 feet and felt discomfort in his right shoulder. He's going back to 60 feet.

Showalter said it was discouraging for Flaherty and the team.

Pitcher Mike Wright is flying to Sarasota tonight to continue rehabbing his right shoulder.First baseman Chris Davis will accompany the Orioles to Tampa this weekend, and will head over to Sarasota while they go on to Toronto. Davis is on the disabled list with a strained right oblique.

I wrote earlier that closer Zach Britton's rehab appearance at short-season Single-A Aberdeen was moved to Tuesday due to the weather and field conditions. Showalter said the delay doesn't negatively impact Britton's schedule, since the team included rain dates in it.

Britton will make two appearances at Single-A Delmarva and head to Double-A Bowie, where the Orioles want him to pitch on back-to-back days.
