Martinez: Robles will not need surgery on injured elbow

NEW YORK - Nationals manager Davey Martinez had good news on top prospect Victor Robles, who suffered a hyperextended left elbow attempting to make a diving catch in shallow center field in a Triple-A game last Monday in Rochester, N.Y.

There had been concern that Robles had broken his elbow or had suffered ligament damage. But Martinez announced after Monday's 8-6 win over the Mets that Robles is in better shape than most had thought.

victor robles getty image 0910.jpg "Robles is not needing surgery at this point," Martinez said. "What we thought was going to be a year, it might not take that long. Prognosis was good. He's still going to have a long recovery, but it's not going to be as long as we thought."

Martinez believes Robles could return to baseball this season.

"He has got no tear. He's got good strength," Martinez said. "We are hoping to get him back, maybe not for a couple months. The good news is there is no tear."

Robles is rated baseball's No. 6 overall prospect according to MLB.com.
