Murphy homer gives Nats first lead (Orioles win 5-4 in 12)

BALTIMORE - For the first time in this two-game series, the Nationals have the lead.

Facing Orioles starter Ubaldo Jiménez with one out in the top of the second, Daniel Murphy crushed a 3-1 offering well over the right-center field wall. His sixth homer of the season gave the Nationals the 1-0 lead.

Nationals right-hander Max Scherzer walked the first batter he faced, Seth Smith. But he has since recorded six consecutive outs. He has two strikeouts.

After two innings at Camden Yards, the Nationals lead the Orioles 1-0.

Update: Jiménez allowed only one hit in the next two innings. Trea Turner singled with two outs in the top of the third. But he was wiped out when he overslid the bag on a steal attempt even though he had easily beaten the throw from catcher Caleb Joseph.

Meanwhile, Scherzer has now struck out six batters in the last three innings. The Orioles have yet to notch a base hit against him through four frames.

After four innings, the Nationals lead the Orioles 1-0.

Update II: Scherzer took a no-hitter into the sixth inning. It marks the 10th time since becoming a member of the Nationals that Scherzer carried a no-hitter into the sixth inning - best among all pitchers in the mahor leagues from 2015-present.

Seth Smith took care of the no-hitter and the shutout with one swing - a solo homer with one out in the bottom of the sixth.

After six innings, the game is tied at 1-1.

Update III: Pinch-hitter Adam Lind crushed a three-run shot over the center field wall in the eighth. The Nats lead 4-1. It was his third pinch-hit homer of the season, which matches an all-time Nationals record.

Scherzer has reached 10 or more strikeouts for the 52nd time in his career, which ties the Dodgers' Clayton Kershaw for the most among active pitchers.

Update IV: Adam Jones hit a solo homer off of Scherzer in the bottom of the eighth. The Nationals' lead has been cut to 4-2.

Update V: Scherzer's line: Eight innings, allowing two runs on four hits with two walks and 11 strikeouts. He threw 113 pitches, 8 for strikes.

Enny Romero pitched the ninth. Chris Davis walked. Mark Trumbo's fly ball to right center was dropped when Brian Goodwin and Bryce Harper collided. But Goodwin threw out Davis at second base for the first out of the inning. Trey Mancini flew out to center field. Romero balked Trumbo to second base. Jonathan Schoop doubled down the right field line to score Trumbo. Craig Gentry was installed as the pinch-runner at second base for Schoop. J.J. Hardy singled into right-center field to score Gentry and the game is even 4-4. Caleb Joseph struck out to end the rally.

Update VI: In the bottom of the 10th, Romero allowed a lead off single to Smith. Matt Albers entered the game for the Nationals. With one out, Manny Machado grounded into a fielder's choice. Joey Rickard was safe at second base after the original call was out. The call was overturned on video review, with Difo credited with a fielding error.

Oliver Pérez came in to pitch to Davis. Pérez got Davis looking for the third strike. Two outs. Jacob Turner came in to pitch to Trumbo. Trumbo popped up to second base in right field, Difo fell backwards to make the catch and end the frame.

It's 4-4 heading to the 11th.

Update VII: With Hardy at second and two outs in the 11th, Caleb Joseph singled to right field. Harper threw home and Wieters tagged Hardy out at home to extend the game to the 12th inning.

Update VIII: With one out in the 12th, Jones singled. He went to third on a single by Machado. Davis was intentionally walked to load the bases. Trumbo singled to left to win the game.

The Orioles win 5-4 in 12 innings over the Nationals.
