Nationals waste Werth's first-inning double (Padres win 4-3 in 11)

The Nationals let a good opportunity get away from them in the top of the first of tonight's game against the Padres at Petco Park.

Two hard-hit balls with one out and the Nationals were in business. Kevin Frandsen singled to right and Jayson Werth, looking fresh after a getting Friday's game off, raked a double to deep right field. Frandsen went to third.

But with Adam LaRoche at the plate, Frandsen got caught too far off third base and was thrown out by catcher Rene Rivera for the second out. Of course, LaRoche walked to put men on first and second. Ryan Zimmerman's fielder's choice grounder to second base forced out LaRoche and the Padres escaped a tight situation without giving up a run.

Right-hander Blake Treinen, making his first start since May 22 at Pittsburgh, allowed a Seth Smith double with two outs in the first. But the Padres were unable to score as well.

No score after one in San Diego.

Update: Watching Cashner set down nine straight makes the first inning loom even larger as a wasted opportunity. Cashner went 1-2-3 in the second through fourth innings.

The Padres got another base hit from Smith in the fourth. Chase Headley followed with a double to deep left-center, and Smith raced around third and scored for a 1-0 Padres lead. Seeing Smith score from first, one wonders if Frandsen would have scored in a similar situation in the first. The Nationals ended up not scoring.

One out later, Cameron Maybin smacked a double that scored Headley and the Padres upped their lead to 2-0.

Update II: Cashner has recorded16 straight outs, including five strikeouts during the run. The Padres lead 2-0 heading to bottom of the sixth.

Update III: Cashner has been relieved by Nick Vincent, and the Nationals are showing some life. With one out, Adam LaRoche hit a bloop double down the left field line that kicked off Smith's leg. Ryan Zimmerman drop in a double down the right field line and the Padres lead was cut in half at 2-1.

With two outs, Ian Desmond launched a two-run shot just to the right of the deepest part of center field for a 3-2 Nationals lead. It was Desmond's 12th homer of the season. A stunning turn of events for the Nationals, who had gone from the second to sixth inning with a hit or a baserunner.

Update IV: Treinen did well and did not let a lack of runs distract him from his job. He finished six innings, allowing only five hits and two runs (both earned) with no walks and three strikeouts. Great to see after he issued five walks in his last start.

Yonder Alonso hit a solo homer to right field with two out in the ninth off Rafael Soriano and the game was tied at 3-3. It was a blown save for Soriano and Alonso's fifth homer of season.

Update V: With men on first and second and two outs in 11th against Craig Stammen, Cameron Maybin hit a bloop single in front of Werth to score Headley and give the Padres a 4-3 win.
