You're already caught up on the latest with Vladimir Guerrero, who is taking live batting practice today and will serve as the designated hitter tomorrow at Double-A Bowie. Also, Luke Scott will get a second opinion on his right shoulder from renowned orthopedist Dr. James Andrews in Alabama. No appointment has been set, but Scott expects to visit Andrews next week. Nolan Reimold would have pinch hit for Scott in the ninth inning last night if the game continued. I wrote about the long fly ball that Scott hit to center field earlier in the night, but he's convinced that, if healthy, that ball would have easily cleared the fence. The Orioles have been told that the tear in Scott's labrum wouldn't get any worse if he kept playing. However, rest and rehab isn't going to do it much good. Shortstop J.J. Hardy had a similar surgical procedure "and responded real well," manager Buck Showalter said. Reliever Jason Berken didn't have surgery on his labrum, "and responded real well," Showalter said. There are two sides to this debate. And you pretty much need two sides. Josh Bell is starting at third base tonight. Part of the reason is Showalter wanted to give Mark Reynolds some semblance of "rest," which is provided by taking him off the field for one night. Showalter also intends to use Derrek Lee as his designated hitter for a night, and it's conceivable that Bell could play first base if he's still here. Bell was recalled instead of Matt Angle because he's more versatile. He can play first and third, as well as DH, and he spent an inning in left field earlier this week before being sent down. Bell's current stay also might be a short one, with Guerrero and Cesar Izturis eligible to come off the disabled list on Tuesday. But Showalter pointed out that he has nine relievers in his bullpen and no need for a fifth starter with Monday's off-day, so a pitcher could be subtracted. Showalter also indicated that both starting pitchers needed for the July 30 doubleheader in New York could come from the minors. We know that left-hander Zach Britton is going to be one of them. Showalter hadn't received any reports on second baseman Brian Roberts, who was shut down yesterday because of another migraine headache.
