Notes on makeup game, Norris, rotation and more (updated)

The Orioles-Nationals game that was postponed last night in D.C. has been rescheduled for Aug. 4 at 7:05 p.m. The Nats confirmed the time in a tweet. The Orioles will board a flight to Toronto after the game. I've talked to a few people in the organization who say there's no interest in catcher A.J. Pierzynski, who's been designated for assignment by the Red Sox. Bud Norris is back on the mound for the Orioles tonight after coming off the disabled list yesterday. He hasn't pitched since June 21. What does it mean to have Norris back in the rotation? "I don't know. We'll see," said manager Buck Showalter. "He was pitching as good as anybody we had at the time that he got hurt. There's a little process he'll go through. I'm a little disappointed with the schedule. I was really hoping to get him on the mound twice for his sake before the break, which we still could do. If he gets shortened up a little bit tonight, we could bring him back on three (days rest) and get him an inning or two on Sunday. Hopefully, we don't have that issue." The Orioles have listed Miguel Gonzalez, Ubaldo Jimenez and Chris Tillman as their starters for the series against the Yankees at Camden Yards that leads into the All-Star break. Hiroki Kuroda and Shane Greene are scheduled to start the first two games for the Yankees. Masahiro Tanaka no longer is an option for Sunday, since he went on the disabled list today with a sore elbow. Another injury strikes in the American League East. The Orioles still could option a starter before the Yankees series and bring up an extra reliever. "It's something we'll decide on when we see how we get through tonight and tomorrow and the next night," Showalter said. "We've done it in the past, where we've moved a reliever in just to make sure we're covered. But I think we're letting the games kind of dictate after each game where we are. We always sit down and kind of evaluate where we are and what our needs are and who we need to completely stay away from. Make yourself write that 'no' next to their name and let them know that we're not going to use you." Manny Machado's next hit will be the 300th of his career. He's 9-for-17 in his last three games, and he's batting .298/.341/.512 with eight doubles, six home runs, 14 RBIs, seven walks and 14 runs scored in 30 games since June 1. Nelson Cruz leads the Orioles with eight go-ahead home runs this season, and Chris Davis is second with five. Nick Markakis is 8-for-19 (.421) with a home run and eight RBIs lifetime against Nationals starter Doug Fister. He ranks third all-time with a career .341 average in interleague play. Darren O'Day has struck out at least one batter in his last seven appearances to match the season-high for an Orioles reliever. He hasn't permitted a run in his last nine outings covering 10 innings, walking one batter and striking out 13. His 1.13 ERA is the lowest among American League relievers. Update: Norris allowed two runs over his last three starts before going on the disabled list. He's surrendered three runs in two innings tonight and trails 3-1. The Nats strung together three straight one-out hits in the first inning - doubles by Anthony Rendon and Jayson Werth and an RBI single by Adam LaRoche. Wilson Ramos homered with one out in the second. Chris Davis had a two-out RBI single in the bottom of the first, following his two-run homer in the 11th inning of Monday night's game in D.C. He's 4-for-11 with two homers and three RBIs lifetime against Nats starter Doug Fister. Manny Machado followed his 5-for-6 night in D.C. with a single tonight in the second inning. He's 10-for-18 since his suspension ended. Down on the farm, Steve Johnson threw two scoreless, hitless innings at short-season Single-A Aberdeen. He walked one and struck out none. Five of his six outs came on ground balls.
