Nationals left-hander Scott Olsen does not want to talk about the loss to Arizona last week in which he allowed a three-run homer to Mark Reynolds. Olsen says that is in the past and it is time to focus on Florida. After he called the outing "terrible (and) awful", you can understand why he wants to just move on.
He has had seven days to prepare for another matchup against his former team and needs the win to get the Nats back in the series.
Game Two has Olsen (3-3, 4.12) facing off against right-hander Chris Volstad (5-8, 4.63).
Olsen says there is a difference between his fastball and sinker, even though they can sometimes do the same thing to a hitter.
"Sometimes I can throw a four-seamer and it has natural sink from being left-handed. Sometimes it sinks out of the zone unintentionally.
"The sinker is coming along. It is kind of hit or miss right now. Some days I feel more comfortable with it than others. Hopefully, tomorrow I will feel comfortable with it."
Olsen's changeup is also a pitch he relies on to get guys out, but he hasn't been throwing that pitch for many years.
"I feel fine with the changeup. It is a pitch I didn't really develop until 2008. It has helped out tremendously for my game. I feel like I can throw it in whatever the count will be. I feel like I can have success with it."
Olsen knows most of the Marlins from his time in South Florida. That can help him in the start, but it can also work against him.
"It is a little different from when I played there. There is still a good core group of guys over there when I played there. It can help and hurt you. I know them pretty well but they also know me pretty well. It comes down to execution of pitches."
Did having seven days to prepare for this start give him an advantage?
"We threw a couple sides with the amount of days between starts. I feel real good. Fastball location is the main thing I work on during bullpen sessions, so far with the two sides we have thrown everything is fine."
