Orioles could be hosting Yankees this week (updated)

The 2020 season is about to get weirder.

The Marlins have been shut down this week due to an increasing number of positive tests for COVID-19, which forced the postponement of both games against the Orioles in Miami. The teams are supposed to play Wednesday and Thursday night at Camden Yards, but more postponements are in the works.

Rather than stay idle, the Orioles could be hosting the Yankees for the next two nights.

The Yankees had their game against the Phillies postponed again today at Citizens Bank Park and, according to multiple reports, their team buses are in a holding pattern rather than transporting the team back to the Bronx.

The truncated schedule has the Yankees coming to Baltimore for a three-game series starting on Monday.

Meanwhile, the Marlins and Phillies will be quarantined for an undermined period. Miami reportedly has 19 positive test results.

The convenience might be too good to pass up.

The Yankees were supposed to play their first home games against the Phillies over the next two nights. Rather than also have them stuck in neutral, it makes sense for the Orioles and Yankees to play at Camden Yards.

Discussions are ongoing and the arrangement could become official later today.

No one can argue that it's much safer to grant the Yankees access to the visiting clubhouse. The Marlins would have been a huge risk to an organization that's been diligent about creating and maintaining the proper environment at its ballpark.

Major League Baseball will try to figure out a way to make up the postponed games.

Forfeits won't be awarded at this time, leaving the Orioles with a 2-1 record following their weekend series in Boston.

Update: MLB sent out a release confirming that the Orioles will host the Yankees over the next two nights.

The changes were made "in order to create more scheduling flexibility later in the season."

The release also states that "additional rescheduling during the week of August 3 will be announced later this week."
