Orioles lineup vs. Yankees

The Orioles are 92 games into the season and resume it tonight after a brief pause for the All-Star break, the first seven against the top two teams in their division. Twenty of the next 30 played within the American League East.

Bad news in the past. Nothing to celebrate in 2022. But the Orioles are 16-21 versus the East after going 20-56 last year, 24-52 in 2019, 23-53 in 2018.

The 2017 team that remained in contention at the beginning of September finished two games below .500 in the division.

You must go back to the 2016 season to find the Orioles above .500, when they went 40-36. The current division record is more impressive when placed alongside the others.

The Orioles are 12-12 versus three teams in the East. The 4-9 record comes against the Yankees, who arrive tonight after the Astros swept them yesterday in a doubleheader.

There’s no way to ease into the unofficial second half. Just lower your head and go hard.

Manager Brandon Hyde has set his rotation with Tyler Wells starting tonight at Camden Yards, Jordan Lyles on Saturday night and Dean Kremer on Sunday afternoon. The Yankees are starting Jameson Taillon, Gerrit Cole and Nestor Cortes Jr.

Wells is 7-5 with a 3.38 ERA and 1.078 WHIP in 18 starts. He’s allowed three runs and six hits with two walks in each of his last two appearances, going four and 5 2/3 innings, respectively.

Wells has held the Yankees to four runs over 14 innings in three starts this season. Giancarlo Stanton hit a two-run homer on April 27 at Yankee Stadium.

Adley Rutschman is batting second for the first time in his career.

Austin Hays is in left field and Anthony Santander is in right. Ramón Urías is the third baseman.

The Orioles have won 11 of their last 13 games and 22 of 33.

Right-hander Taillon is 10-2 with a 3.86 ERA and 1.126 WHIP in 18 starts. He’s walked only 12 batters in 100 1/3 innings.

Three of Taillon’s starts have come against the Orioles. He’s allowed seven runs and 16 hits in 14 1/3 innings.

Urías and Cedric Mullins hit home runs off Taillon.

Aaron Judge has hit six home runs against the Orioles this season in 12 games and 32 in 81 career games. He also has 16 doubles and 71 RBIs.

Judge leads the majors with 34 home runs and 76 runs scored, is second in slugging percentage at .619, and is third in OPS at .985.

The Yankees’ plus-196 run differential leads the majors. They own the best record at 64-30.
